The 2008 Award has now closed.
The CIWEM Young Members’ Award recognises the outstanding contribution to environmental understanding made by a young member of CIWEM.
Entry Criteria
Entrants must be nominated via a Branch, Group or employer by completing the nomination form. An outline CV must also be attached.
Entrants must be:
- a member of CIWEM (any level)
Judging Criteria
Each nomination will be assessed by a panel of judges including representatives of CIWEM and Jacobs Babtie as well as independent suitably qualified individuals. In the first instance judging will be based on the nomination form, according to the following criteria:
- Why they were nominated
- Work the nominee has carried out outside their normal remit
- Are they a good CIWEM ambassador
- Projects/Awards won
Shortlisted nominees will then be invited to undertake a presentation on their chosen topic before the judging panel in London in early 2008. Teleconference facilities will be provided for those unable to attend.
The Prize
The Award comprises of a trophy (a silver quaich cup), a framed certificate, publication of an article in Water and Environment Magazine and a cash prize which has been increased this year to £1000 . The Award will be presented at the CIWEM Annual Dinner in London in May 2008.
Previous Winners/Projects
2008 will be the first year the Award will be run in this format.
Congratulations to Hannah O'Callaghan from the CIWEM Rivers and Coastal Group, the winner of the 2008 Young Members Award. The judges also chose to highly commend Lara Ball from the South East branch and Richard Williams from the Tyne and Humber branch.
The 2006 Award was won by Joanna Eyquem of CIWEM's Metropolitan Branch for her paper entitled 'Using fluvial geomorphology to inform integrated river basin management'. Two other entrants were commended this year, David Speers of the Northern Ireland Branch was commended for his paper 'Impacts of artificial aeration on dissolved oxygen deficiency and stratification in impounded estuarine waters' and Helen Richardson of the Tyne and Humber Branch was commended for her entry 'Paull Holme Strays Managed Realignment – Making the most of it!'.

The nominators should send the completed nomination form along with an outline CV, by email to awards@ciwem.org. The closing date is the 18th January 2008.
Further Information
The candidates that are shortlisted and invited to London to present their paper before the judges can apply to have travel costs reimbursed.
