2007 CIWEM HK Photographer Award

We organised the first CIWEM HK Photographer Award with the main theme of “Sustainable Development”.  Finally 20 nice pictures were received which highlighted local environmental and nature conservation issues. The Judges, including Dr. Malcolm Broom, Ms. Audrey Eu, Mr. CY Lam, Mr. CC Lay, Mr. Edwin Lau, Mr. Coleman Ng and Mr. Otto Poon, made difficult decisions in deciding the winners from the high quality entries. The final results of the Photographer Award are announced as follows:

Champion: Poon Wing Kin (Photo title: Golden Oyster) See attached file: Golden Oyster.jpg

Photo Description: Oysters were a famous product of Lau Fau Shan many years ago.  After the cargo dock at Shan Zhen was built, ships have been contaminating the sea every day.  Oysters there are no longer safe to eat.  However, they are still there, not as food, but as filters.  How long do we need to wait before the oysters are safe to eat again?

1st runner-up: Au Wing Yan (Photo title: Environmental Protection from the young generation (translated from Chinese) See attached file: Environmental Protection from the young generation.jpg

Photo Description: Environmental Protection Education is important to children (translated from Chinese)

2nd  runner-up: Leung  Kim  Fung  (Photo title: Competing uses of our marine waters) See attached file: Competing uses of our marine waters.jpg

Photo Description: The photo was taken on Ap Chau at the northeastern waters of Hong Kong.  It shows waters there have been under pressure from different competing activities, such as fishing, navigation, container port development and conservation.  A comprehensive water management strategy is essential to balance them out.

Certificate of Merits

Fung Chi Zhi, April  (Photo title: Flowers vs Waste Gas) See attached file: Flowers vs Waste Gas.jpg

Photo Description: The warm breeze nurtures the flowers outside the London British Energy plant, whilst also spreads the waste gas around.  Waste gas results in climate change so the traditional oil and coal generated energy should be replaced by renewable energy.

Au Chin  Ki (Photo title: Unlimited solar and wind resources) See attached file: Unlimited solar and wind resources.jpg

Photo Description: We should fully use the natural resources, such as solar and wind to produce power for our need, so that our living planet will not be polluted.

Kiu Chung Yiu (Photo title: We don’t want the layer) See attached file: We do not want the layer.jpg

Photo Description: The photo was taken at the top of Lantau Peak (Fung Wong Shan) to Tong Chung and the Airport where the most serious air pollution is observed.  A thick brown layer is covering the town and isolated the blue sky.  It has been existed for many years, gone in someday?  Should we do something to help?  How about the Government“S”?  Action Blue Sky under action?  I hope this photo could bring out your introspection.

Prize presentation will be held at the CIWEM HK Annual Dinner on 1 June 2007.  We thank for the participants as well as the judges in contributing to the success of this competition.
