Posted on behalf of the Scottish Branch Committee

Greetings from the Scottish Branch

On behalf of the branch committee I would like to thank-you all for your continued interest in CIWEM. We hope you had a great summer and are already enjoying our programme, which is packed with interesting events and topics (or at least we think so having listened to your feedback from last year!).
We had over 500 people attending last years events. So far this year we have had two evening meetings with a Scottish Water Theme – The Edinburgh WTW – Drinking Water Project and Customer Service in the water Industry. The site visit to Whitelee wind farm was also superb. By the time this goes out we will also have had our first work shop - An overview and update on SUDS, which has been fully subscribed. We also participated in the WaterAid Regatta in September awarding a prize for the most sponsored vessel. We know we’re only as good as our members and we do try hard to cater for your interests as closely as possible when designing the programme.
As well as having a record number of events this year we have a record number of sponsors so thanks to everyone concerned. We rely on our sponsors to help provide speakers and venues for us and to help us keep local costs down. As part of our cost cutting we have held back hard copies of the programme until the symposium flier was ready to send you - It costs us about £500 per mail shot.

So …What else is on?

The Sustainable theme continues at our Branch Symposium in Edinburgh on 13 November. This year’s title is ‘Achieving Sustainable Development – Fact or Fiction?’ We have a fantastic line up of Key note and main theme speakers representing Scottish Government, The Scottish Sustainable Development Forum, SEPA, Scottish Water, and case studies from some of the most prestigious developments across Scotland. As usual this will be preceded by our ever popular Annual Branch Dinner and Water Aid Raffle. We are pleased to be returning to the George Hotel, which has served us well in the past. We usually have over 100 members and their guests joining us for the dinner and we look forward to seeing you there. It is always a challenge to attract delegates to the symposium however and we need at least 60 of you to attend to make it break even.
We hope to hold a Branch Photography competition but this will be rescheduled for later in the year.

We will send advance warning by e-mail at least one week in advance of each meeting. Please note that whilst CIWEM HQ may have your e-mail details on their database, we can’t use these – for data protection reasons! Therefore if you would like to receive the fliers please pass your e-mail address to Neil  McLean  or Ian  Watt  (contact details on Branch Committee document). Many thanks and see you soon!!

Young and New Members Group

The Branch representative on the CIWEM New Members' Group is Stuart Bone. Please contact Stuart at: stuart.bone@mouchelparkman.com for details of Branch initiatives for new members.

Following continued consultation with new and young members of CIWEM in Scotland we shall encourage members to join together for drinks following a number of the formal events in the 2007-08 session.

All members are invited to these informal social events.  The first of these will take place following the "Application of SUDS to Golf Course Design" evening meeting on Thursday 15th November.  We shall gather following the event and adjourn to a nearby hostelry to socialise/network/discuss future New Members events/assist with CIWEM membership.

Prior to the above event there is the opportunity to 'mingle' at the Annual Dinner, please let me know if this would be of interest to you and we can look at scheduling getting together after the meal and raffle.

If you wish to be included on the mailing list for young and new members please email Stuart, otherwise keep an eye on this section of the website for regular updates.
