23 January 2008 The Future of Dams in the UK Hyder Consulting, Bristol As climate change significantly increases the risk of catastrophic dam failure, particularly as a result of severe droughts, stronger winds and severe rainfall events, this half day conference will bring together some of the leading experts operating within the south west region to discuss a variety of issues relating to the future of dams in the UK. 5 December 2007 Carbon Footprint - How Big Is Yours? Richard Huish College, Taunton Further to the announcement in the Queen's Speech regarding the Climate Change Bill, which is aiming to reduce UK carbon emissions by at least 60% by 2050, thus making the UK the first country in the world to have legally binding carbon reduction targets, this evening event will be assessing Carbon Footprinting, a critical part of the carbon reduction process. Wednesday 6th June 2007 Climate Change -- The Future of the Low Carbon Economy in the South West Location: Taunton Conference Centre / The Genesis Centre, Taunton, Somerset In preparation for the opening of the " Live Earth " World Concert, a 24hr global music event on 7/7/07 ( www.liveearth.org ) and ( www.liveearth.msn.com ) and following on from the Academy Award Winning Best Documentary Feature, " An Inconvenient Truth " by the Former American Vice President Al Gore, the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 4th Assessment Report, the Energy Review and the draft Climate Change Bill, the CIWEM SW Branch held a one day conference and exhibition to outline the implications of Climate Change and The Future of the Low Carbon Economy in the South West.
The event was held at the sustainably constructed "Genesis Centre" (www.genesisproject.com/genesis05/) and the day was in support of WaterAid (www.wateraid.org) to illustrate the effects of climate change in developing countries. Awards The CIWEM Best Diploma Student Award 2007, sponsored by the Environment Agency went to Sophie Peacock. Sophie has worked for Wessex Water for four and a half years starting in the Developers Group and then as part of the River Ecology Team. She is currently the Sustainability Coordinator for the company and on the CIWEM Structured Training Scheme. She studied part time at the University of Bristol and has now completed both CIWEM’s Certificate and Diploma after three years hard work.
