CIWEM have developed a training experience open to
everyone, both members and
non-members. Using a web-based elearning format,
allowing you to study at any time, and anywhere, that you have a
web connection, our new on-line training units will provide you
with valuable continuing professional development (CPD).
The assessments that enable you to demonstrate that you have met
unit the learning outcomes are all aligned with the 14 Mandatory
Competences that you will need to demonstrate when applying for
CIWEM corporate membership.
So, why not gain CPD whilst working towards completion of your
application for CIWEM membership. These units have the
benefit of tutor-support through Skype, email
and phone and provide both the background and detailed
knowledge that you need to really understand the technologies that
are applied to remove pollution from water.
Each tutor-supported unit includes the following:
- Access to an on line training unit containing teaching and
learning content and linked to a wide range of other quality
- Online support and feedback throughout the unit from a tutor
with nearly 10 years experience supporting on-line learners, and
who regularly reviews applications for CIWEM corporate membership
and who has acted as a professional interviewer for membership
applicants for many years
- A range of built-in self-assessment and self-evaluation
questions throughout the unit
- One or more summative assessments [assignments] addressing all
of the unit learning outcomes [LOs]
- Clear mapping of the above assignment(s) across a range of the
CIWEM 14 Mandatory Competences [MCs] used when reviewing
applications for corporate membership of the Institution
- Provision of individual feedback to each participant covering
how well you have met the LOs for the unit, and reviewing the
extent to which you have addressed the associated CIWEM MCs
- Suggestions about how you might consider modifying your
thoughts to align responses more closely to the requirements of the
- A completion certificate for participants who successfully
achieve all of the unit LOs
Each 24 hour equivalent unit runs over a period of 15 weeks and
each 8 hour equivalent unit runs over 5 weeks. You
will need to devote 2.5-3.5 hours per week as you work through
each one - the precise time will depend on your prior knowledge and
your depth of interest in the different topics being covered. Each
unit is free-standing and can be taken either individually or in
'I've found this course invaluable, as my knowledge of
sewage treatment prior to this was strictly limited to what I had
come across, and it is also very well structured'
Anna Wallen, Senior Research Scientist, Thames Water Innovation
"Thank you for a lovely course...I really have enjoyed
working on it."
Municipal Waste Water

Edward EASTHAM, CIP/Maintenance Manager, Veolia Water Guam
'Just to let you know I've accepted a job offer
working as a Process Scientist. During my feedback they
told me I had good underpinning knowledge of wastewater processes
which they hope to further develop. Obviously the course I
undertook with yourself had a lot to do with this and so I
would just like to thank you again for all the help you've
given me over the last few months.'
"The amount of information was exactly the type that I
search high and low for in my job. I can read a thousand manuals
that I get when a new piece of plant is commissioned and still it
doesn't explain things as well as the content on this course.
Really good stuff."
Stuart Chatten - Anglian Water
"...thank you very much for all of your help and support
throughout the CIWEM unit. It has all been very informative and
useful to me and I have definitely learnt a lot. The course was
definitely set out in a very good and easy way to learn. It was
nice to receive such great and positive feedback for my

from it - on a work and personal interest level. You have

across as interesting, resourceful and easy to read."

Building a Sustainable Business
"I enjoyed doing the course and acquired a much better
understanding of the complex issues that challenge the concept of
BEAR Scotland Ltd.
"...a very useful grounding of the various options available
for disinfection. I particularly value the extensive hyperlinks to
additional material which when followed allow a much more in-depth
information to be gained where it is required..."
Introduction to the UK Water Industry

consolidated knowledge & reminded me of things I'd
