CIWEM and Staffordshire University Online CPD Courses
Staffordshire University and CIWEM have developed a new training experience for you. Using a web-based elearning format, allowing you to study at any time, and anywhere, that you have a web connection, our new on-line training units will provide you with valuable continuing professional development (CPD).
The assessments that enable you to demonstrate that you have met unit the learning outcomes are all aligned with the 14 Mandatory Competences that you will need to demonstrate when applying for CIWEM corporate membership.
So, why not gain CPD whilst working towards completion of your application for CIWEM membership. These units have the benefit of tutor-support through Skype and provide both the background and detailed knowledge that you need to really understand the technologies that are applied to remove pollution from water.
Each tutor-supported unit includes the following:
- Access to an on line training unit containing teaching and learning content and linked to a wide range of other quality web-based resources
- Online support and feedback throughout the unit from a tutor with nearly 10 years experience supporting on-line learners, and who regularly reviews applications for CIWEM corporate membership and who has acted as a professional interviewer for membership applicants for many years
- A range of built-in self-assessment and self-evaluation questions throughout the unit
- One or more summative assessments [assignments] addressing all of the unit learning outcomes [LOs]
- Clear mapping of the above assignment(s) across a range of the CIWEM 14 Mandatory Competences [MCs] used when reviewing applications for corporate membership of the Institution
- Provision of individual feedback to each participant covering how well you have met the LOs for the unit, and reviewing the extent to which you have addressed the associated CIWEM MCs
- Suggestions about how you might consider modifying your thoughts to align responses more closely to the requirements of the CIWEM MCs
- A completion certificate for participants who successfully achieve all of the unit LOs
Each of the units below runs over a period of 10 weeks and you’ll need to devote 2.5-3.5 hours per week as you work through each one - the precise time will depend on your prior knowledge and your depth of interest in the different topics being covered. Each unit is free-standing and can be taken either individually or in any sequence.
The following units will soon be available :
I. Municipal Waste Water Treatment
This unit analyses the nature of municipal wastewaters and the issues involved in the management of discharges to sewers and controlled waters, including combined storm overflows. It examines the physical, chemical and biological quality of urban and domestic wastewaters, together with the preliminary, primary, secondary and tertiary/advanced treatment technologies and processes that are used to meet discharge standards and also reviews the measures that are used to monitor and control discharges of industrial effluent to sewer. The unit also addresses the relevant UK legislation and regulation covering urban wastewaters and trade effluents as well as looking at alternative low-technology options for low-income and developing countries.
Provisional start date: 22nd March 2010
Download the Unit Handbook here for more information about this unit.
II. Sludge Treatment and Management
Following a brief review of the removal of pollution from wastewaters and the consequent production of primary and secondary sludges, this unit examines the characteristics of industrial and municipal sewage sludges and the options available for subsequent treatment and reuse. Sludge removal and consolidation, conditioning, anaerobic (and aerobic) digestion, mechanical dewatering, thermal drying and incineration are explained and discussed together with advanced sludge treatment (AST) options, including pyrolysis and gasification. Combined heat and power and energy from waste issues are also dealt with together with a particular emphasis on land application of stabilised sludges for agriculture, horticulture and reclamation uses. The unit also reviews the relevant UK legislative and regulatory framework relating to sewage sludge management/reuse.
III. Potable Water Treatment
This unit reviews the demand for potable water and the nature and characteristics of available water sources and drinking water treatment technologies. The physical, chemical and biological quality of different water sources are considered together with a detailed review of the various water treatment processes that can be applied to produce potable water from them, including screening, clarification [coagulation/flocculation], sedimentation/floatation, filtration, disinfection, adsorption, ion exchange and use of GAC/PAC and fluoridation. Water distribution and supply is reviewed together with the safeguards that are taken to protect consumers, with an emphasis on disinfection. The relevant drinking, bottled and private water supply legislative and regulatory framework is also covered within the unit.
Provisional start date: 28th June 2010
The cost for each of the above units will be £500+VAT per person.
