5. 2009 CIWEM Pocket Diary
CIWEM has members in nearly 100 countries and for as little as £1,500 your company could globally market its brand. Our pocket diary has always been very popular but unfortunately we were unable to produce a diary in 2008, much to the dismay of many members.
We would like to provide a CIWEM 2009 pocket diary and are offering the following sponsorship packages:
AN EXCLUSIVE PACKAGE – for total exclusivity a sponsor will receive 4 pages of company text, their company logo on the front cover together with the CIWEM logo and 75 diaries for their own use. This exclusive deals costs £10,500.
Non exclusive packages are :The Gold Package – for £2,500 – 2 pages of company info, your company logo on the inside cover + 25 diaries or,The Silver Package – for £1,500 – 1 page of company info and your company logo on inside cover.
This is excellent way to market your company to a target audience of CIWEM members and others who have a stake in the environment – you will literally be in their pocket as a constant reminder throughout 2009.
In order to produce the CIWEM diary the Institution has to raise the full amount of £10,500 needed to cover the production costs. In the event that insufficient sponsorship is raised, companies making a commitment to take a sponsorship package will be informed and any monies paid will be refunded. The deadline for the decision whether the Institution will produce a 2009 diary will be made at the end of August 2008.
If you are interested in the opportunity to sponsor the CIWEM 2009 diary please contact Lorraine Poole on lorrine@ciwem.org for further details.

6. CIWEM Says Protect Indigenous Knowledge
CIWEM calls for international cooperation in finding solutions to problems faced by indigenous people in areas such as culture, education, health, human rights, the environment and social and economic development. Indigenous peoples have the smallest ecological footprints on Earth but they suffer the worst impacts from climate change and mitigation measures, such as the loss of land through biofuel production.
CIWEM recognises that the UN’s International Day of the World’s Indigenous People on 9th August provides an occasion to redouble our efforts in understanding the relationship between cultural diversity and the environment with regards to sustainable development. CIWEM believes that culture should be incorporated into all development policies, be they related to education, science, communication, health, environment or tourism.
CIWEM Executive Director, Nick Reeves, says:
“We need to increase our cultural understanding of how different societies interact with the environment, protect indigenous knowledge and traditions, and preserve endangered languages that keep traditions alive, inspire respect for our planet and link communities across international borders. CIWEM believes that justice, tolerance, respect for human rights and recognition of diverse cultures provide the foundation for sustainable development.”

19. CIWEM International News
UNFCCC – Climate Change Convention Paul Horton and Geoff Darch attended the UNFCCC meeting in Bonn in June and held discussions with the secretariat about inputting into the Nairobi Work Programme, the technical work programme focused on adaption issues. The UNFCCC secretariat explained that they need input from professional organizations who have members with a wide range of experience.
The next stage for CIWEM will be to develop a Climate Change Network (CCN), which has been mentioned previously. The network could then act as a focal point, bringing together members who are working in the area or for whom climate change is a key issue. The network should include people from across government, consultancy, companies etc and across the globe. It would also be important to have a 'climate change champion' within each CIWEM panel, branch and/or region, with the aim of pulling together the expertise and developing CIWEM responses to some of the key issues being discussed by the UNFCCC secretariat.
As a professional organization, CIWEM has a remit to develop member awareness and skills and bring people together to solve or try and solve issues. This network will also support the advocacy work being undertaken by CIWEM in the area of climate change (see http://www.ciwem.org/policy/advocacy_plans/index.asp).
Do you want to be part of the CIWEM Climate Change Network (CCN) and input directly to the UNFCCC? Then contact Paul Horton – paul@ciwem.org
