4. CIWEM West Midlands Branch Environmental Concert

The final event of the CIWEM West Midlands 2007/8 calendar will be an environmental concert in the spirit of the Presidential Theme this year – Arts and the Environment. It will take place at the Church of St Peter and St John in Ladywood – The Ladywood ARC (Arts, Religion and Community) at 7pm on Saturday 12th July.

The concert is being given by the Bournville Young Singers who performed so well at the Keynote Address in January and they are performing “Ocean World – An Ecological Musical” which was commissioned by the World Wide Fund for Nature in 1998 to celebrate the International Year of the Ocean. The BYS are themselves a community based organisation designed to attract young people and give them new interests and fellowship. Ocean World is a tuneful, engaging and educational work telling the tale of a mother hump back whale and her calf as they make their treacherous journey from the tropics to the cold northern waters.

The concert is being given to raise money for WaterAid and the branch is delighted that Jack Carnell, Managing Director of South Staffordshire Water, will be the WaterAid representative on the night, having only recently returned from a mission with WaterAid in Africa where he was inspired by the work that was being done by WaterAid.

5. RE:Fashion Awards 2008

RE:Fashion is a brand new fashion phenomenon, set to transform social and environmental standards in the fashion industry within a decade.

The RE:Fashion Awards will take place on 13th November 2008 in London, celebrating people and organisations who have taken great strides in tackling poverty, healing the environment, and changing consumer attitudes towards ethical fashion.

High profile partners include Hilary Alexander, Fashion Editor of The Telegraph, Jane Shepherdson, Anna Orsini of British Fashion Council and designer Katharine Hamnett. A selection of the world’s most innovative and highly respected designers will showcase one-off pieces made from sustainable materials in a 27-piece catwalk finale. A few of the designers involved include Preen, Marios Schwab, Ann-Sofie Back and Todd Lynn.

CIWEM is sponsoring the RE:PEOPLE AWARD 2008 which is open to any fashion, textiles or accessories designer or business. This award focuses upon businesses and initiatives which have changed the lives of the people and the communities involved in their supply chain and which have the potential to achieve even more progressive social change. Judges will be looking for innovation around raising social standards in the fashion industry, while still making high quality products. This could include fair trade practices, improved wages, working conditions, workers’ empowerment, and programs to build sustainable livelihoods.

7. A Sustainable Population

To mark World Population Day on 11th July, CIWEM is demanding that countries address the complex linkages between population, consumption, poverty and sustainable development.

The largest population growth is found in poor countries, which have the least adequate resources to address the challenges. The unplanned growth of cities creates huge pressure on local ecosystems and can overwhelm environmental resources. Millions have settled in slums without access to adequate shelter, clean water and sanitation. This produces further deterioration in living standards and threatens sustainable development.

CIWEM believes that the integration of population issues into economic and development strategies will speed up sustainable development and poverty alleviation, and contribute to an improved quality of life of the population.

CIWEM Executive Director, Nick Reeves, says:

“There must be an end to the presumption that economic growth via a rising population is essential for a successful society. A third of all people who have ever lived are alive today.Large unsustainable populations, particularly when allied to high levels of consumption, cause environmental degradation and contribute to climate change.

Directing more resources to all of these issues is critical to meeting the Millennium Development Goals, particularly those focusing on the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger. The MDGs cannot be achieved if the links between reproductive health, population, women’s rights and social progress are not addressed properly.”

8. Credit Crunch Good For The Environment?

With the credit crunch, rising fuel prices and inflation affecting millions of people, CIWEM believes that now is the time to re-evaluate the way we live.

After years of continuous growth for the UK economy, we are facing spiralling resource costs. However, as consumers tighten their belts, the Government’s priority is the more ‘pressing’ challenge of the economy, and not moves to tackle climate change and protect the environment.

Although the UK’s personal debt totals £1.4 billion and is increasing by £1 million every five minutes, every year we produce more than 434 million tonnes of waste and throw away one third of all groceries we buy.

CIWEM believes that savvy consumers can reduce their outgoings and help the environment.

CIWEM wants people to understand that unfettered consumerism will harm their financial security and damage the environment. Now is the time to change our behaviour to reduce our consumption levels, thus saving money and helping the environment. Simple steps should incorporate the reduce, reuse and recycle philosophy and could range from fitting energy saving light bulbs to forgoing the latest trend-led unsustainable fashion, and unplugging mobile phone chargers to turning down your hot water thermostat.

20. CIWEM International News

The international part of CIWEM has been extremely active over the past couple of months and E-news subscribers have already heard about the CIWEM Presidential visit to Chongqing and Shanghai. Following the visit to China the CIWEM President and Director of International Development went to Hong Kong to join the branch AGM and Annual Dinner, plus visit the Environment Protection Department, Water Supplies Department and Hong Kong Institution of Engineers for discussions about full recognition for CIWEM members. The visit also coincided with an excellent seminar by the local branch on Total Water Management in Hong Kong and China.

CIWEM representatives Geoff Darch of Atkins and Paul Horton of CIWEM, joined the latest meeting of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which focused on technical inputs under the Nairobi Work Programme, which is linked to adaptation issues. This is all part of establishing the next set of target emissions of greenhouse gases. Professional organisations, in particular CIWEM have a role to play under the convention by ensuring that decisions are taken based on the best possible information. CIWEM is unique in having such a diverse membership with varying interests and over the coming months we will be looking to harness that ‘excellence’ and develop of programme of activities that ensure an effective input under the UNFCCC technical work stream.

The British Council continues to be actively involved with CIWEM and the Institution will look to work with them in developing a ‘Water Futures’ programme in the Near East & North Africa (NENA) region; providing speakers for climate change events in Brazil, China, Hong Kong; plus be involved with the development of ideas linked to the 200th year of the birth of Darwin, on the back of which the council want to launch a series of programmes linked to the theme of biodiversity.

CIWEM has also represented the European Water Association (EWA) at the second meeting of the process to develop the European Water Sector view as part of the regional process for the World Water Forum in Istanbul in March 2009. The key themes for the meeting included ‘Water Scarcity and Droughts’; ‘River Basin Management and Transboundary Cooperation’; ‘Future of Water in Europe’ and ‘Sanitation’ The aim of the regional process is to put to the World Water Forum a view on the current state of the European Water Sector, issues being faced a forward look as to what the future holds.

Immediate Past President Bob Sargent, represented the Institution at a forum during the International Water Week held in Singapore at the end of June. The visit coincided with a study visit by CIWEM Hong Kong Branch to Singapore, the group looking at a number of waste projects as well as attending part of the water show. CIWEM member from Singapore met with Hong Kong members and discussed how to build closer links between the two sets of members. Bob Sargent had a meeting with the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) to discuss the development of the CIWEM-IES MOU and he then went onto Beijing to represent the Institution at a function sponsored by Norton Rose, held as part of the Lord Mayors visit to China. Norton Rose had on display some of the CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year pictures from 2007.

For further information on all these, please contact Paul Horton – paul@ciwem.org
