2. CIWEM Awards 2007

CIWEM maintains an established and successful portfolio of Environmental Awards to celebrate the outstanding achievements of environmental professionals and to raise awareness of the excellent work environmentalists do. 2006 was a successful year. We received a broad range of high quality entries, and details of the winners can be found on the CIWEM website at: www.ciwem.org/awards/

RSPB/CIWEM Living Wetlands Award closing 24/11/06
The RSPB/CIWEM Living Wetlands Award was established in 2003 by the two organisations to reward projects which demonstrate the multiple functions and sustainable use of wetland habitats.

The RSPB/CIWEM Living Wetlands Award has been given RSA accreditation after rigorous examination by the RSA - the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. The RSA, in conjunction with DEFRA, administer the UK’s entries to the European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE), making the Award one of only seven feeder schemes in the UK to the prestigious European Business Awards for the Environment. Further details on the European Business Awards can be found at: http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/awards/index_en.htm

To be eligible for the Award, projects must:

  • contribute to the delivery of priority UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species and habitat targets for wetlands
  • demonstrate sustainability and delivery of multiple benefits e.g. flood alleviation, wastewater treatment, recreation, eco-tourism, water resource security
  • ensure no priority BAP species or habitats are harmed by the project

The prize consists of the Mance Memorial Trophy, publicity, a framed certificate and a cheque for £1,500, to be used to fund the delivery of further UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) targets, publicity of the project and/or related education.

Please see http://www.ciwem.org/awards/living_wetlands/index.asp for further details.

3. Chinese Delegations to visit CIWEM

Two groups of officials from China are visiting CIWEM during August and September. The first visiting organisation, from Beijing, is the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences (CSES) and was set-up as a sub-group of the Chinese State Environment Protection Agency, SEPA, in 1979. Further details can be found at: http://www.sepa.gov.cn/english/chanel-4/detail-4.php3?chanel=4&column=8&id=55 In China, academics and professionals tend to join societies such as the CSES, so they are similar in some ways to CIWEM. A meeting has been arranged that includes the Environment Agency and some CIWEM members. They have stated that they are interested in Water Resource Management and Soil Protection.

The second group, the Municipal Government and the Dianchi Administration Bureau from Kunming, will visit UK between the 16th and 22nd of September. The purpose of the visit is to exchange ideas with Environmental Agency and CIWEM about environmental management, especially river and lake management and pollution prevention. There is a beautiful lake in the centre of the Kunming City, named Dianchi, which suffers from increasingly bad pollution. The head of the delegation is also the deputy mayor of Kunming City.

Any person wishing to receive more information about either delegation or meet the Kunming group in September should contact Paul Horton at paul@ciwem.org

7. Decoupling of the Mandatory Competencies

A decision has recently been taken by CIWEM’s Joint Professional Board to decouple the Mandatory Competencies at the Professional Review Interview stage (Stage 2), where an applicant is applying for Member and CEng, CSci or CEnv.

This means that applicants that are suitable for Membership of CIWEM but fail to meet the requirements for CEng, CSci or CEnv can be accepted for membership of CIWEM but not for external registration.

However gaining external registration will be dependant on being successful for Member status of CIWEM.

If an applicant is unsuccessful in gaining external registration at this initial interview and wishes to be reconsidered at a later date, a further Professional Review Interview will be required.

Drinks with Secondee from Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forestry, 17th August
During a visit to Turkey earlier in the year, Defra agreed to support a six week attachment for Sedat Kadioglu, Head of the Foreign Relations and EU Division within the Turkish Ministry for Environment and Forestry. His secondment has already begun and we would like to give him a chance to meet CIWEM Members at 5pm Thursday 17th August at CIWEM’s office.

The primary purpose of his visit is to gain an understanding of how the UK has negotiated and is implementing various EU Directives. However he has indicated he is also interested in:
a) Water - How the Water Framework Directive, Urban Water Treatment Directive, Dangerous Substances Directive etc. are being implemented
b) Waste - How the waste framework directive, landfill directive, and packaging of Waste directive are being implemented
c) Air – How the Air Framework Directive, and other related directives are being implemented

With all these, he is keen to know how the UK has established an effective enforcement system, how has the UK established a monitoring programme, how information is collected and utilised, what penalty system exists and how much access the public have to information.

Sedat will be spending a week with the Environment Agency as part of his Defra secondment but he is extremely keen to talk to professionals in the water & environment field. Interested members who would like to attend this informal meeting should respond directly to Paul Horton at paul@ciwem.org

10. NetRegs Help for Small Businesses

New online assessment tool launched to help small businesses with their environmental responsibilities.

Small businesses can quickly assess if they are taking the correct measures required to comply with environmental legislation thanks to a new online questionnaire from NetRegs – www.netregs.gov.uk - the free and confidential website that provides practical, sector-specific guidance to small businesses on their environmental obligations.

‘Solutions to Pollution’ has been developed by NetRegs – set up by the UK’s environmental regulators - in response to its most recent SME-nvironment survey. The survey found the vast majority of businesses in UK (93%) did not think that they undertook activities that could cause harm to the environment. However, when prompted with a list of potentially harmful activities, 41% admitted to carrying out at least one. The most common were storing chemicals, fuel or oils (47%) and storing waste (30%).

The questionnaire, which challenges assumptions and practices amongst small businesses, has sections on waste disposal, risk assessment and emergency procedures and can be accessed via a link on the NetRegs homepage.

Richard Martin, Programme Manager at NetRegs, said: “If you run a small business it’s important to stay up-to-date with your environmental legal requirements. Waste materials produced by your business or within your workplace are regulated by law, and you are responsible for their safe and legal disposal.

“By ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, small businesses can avoid the risk of prosecution and could benefit commercially in terms of cost savings and improved customer relations.”

John Holbrow, National Environment Chairman at the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “Small businesses often don’t have the time or resources to keep up with the ever increasing environmental legislation. This assessment tool will hopefully encourage managers and owners to take a closer look at how successful they are in complying with their responsibilities.”

To access the questionnaire, go to www.netregs.gov.uk . Small businesses can also register on NetRegs to receive its free email updates and guidelines about environmental issues, plus links to further information.
