This month:
1. Dealing with Directives at The Global Environment, Tuesday 9th – Thursday 11th October 2007
Nearly 500 million people live within the European Union – people whose daily lives and environment are affected by environmental legislation transposed from European directives. The effective and coordinated implementation of directives has a major role in protecting Europe’s valued species, spaces and natural resources and improving human well-being.
The Dealing with Directives session at The Global Environment 2007 looks at how key European environment directives such as the Water Framework Directive, Flooding Directive and Habitats Directive overlap and interact. Speakers include Sarah Thomas (Pinsent Masons) giving a legal perspective on the WFD, Duncan Huggett (Environment Agency) talking about the implementation of European wildlife legislation through flood risk management, Geoff Darch (Atkins) looking at the implications of climate change on environment directives and Karen Simpson (Mouchel Parkman) presenting a bite-sized approach to tackling the WFD. The session is being chaired by Peter Matthews OBE and takes place on Wednesday 10th October.
The Global Environment 2007 is CIWEM’s fifth Annual Conference; a three-day, 42-session event at London’s Brit Oval addressing the key strategic issues in water and environmental management. By listening to presentations, debating, networking and taking part in interactive workshops, delegates will learn about the cross-organisational challenges facing the sector and world-class innovative solutions being developed and deployed to meet these challenges.
Other conference sessions at the Global Environment 2007 include:
Integrated Environmental Management; ‘A Sustainable Olympics?’; Sustainable Waste Management, Implications of Climate Change; Transition to a Low Carbon Economy; Urbanisation and the Environment; ‘A Sustainable Water Industry?’ and Faiths, Culture and the Environment.

3. The Global Environment Dinner
Join us for the Global Environment Dinner on Tuesday 9 October 2007.
MV Silver Sturgeon is the 61 metre flagship of the Silver Fleet, ‘the ultimate venue on the River Thames’. Boarding at Millbank Millennium Pier from 6:30 pm, we will enjoy a champagne reception followed by an evening cruise past the iconic sights of London between Westminster and Greenwich.
CIWEM’s Annual Dinner at Drapers' Hall is always a sell-out event, and the Global Environment Dinner promises to be another evening to remember in an equally magical setting. Following the champagne reception we will be seated for a three-course dinner prepared by “rhubarb” on the river and accompanied by fine wines. Both individual tickets (partners and other guests welcome) and corporate tables are available.
On the return journey to Millbank we will put in for an additional stop at Westminster Pier for the convenience of those guests staying at hotels near to Westminster Bridge, or requiring onward travel on London Underground.
For more information on corporate tables of ten, and on opportunities available to support this event with sponsorship, please contact the Secretariat or telephone +44 (0)1359 221004.

5. Let The Environment Agency Do Its Job
CIWEM expects the Government to learn from the floods, which insurers now estimate at costing £3 billion. Our fragmented approach to drainage with local councils, water companies, highway authorities and the Environment Agency all having separate roles is no longer appropriate. CIWEM believes that by giving a single authority, like the Agency, a stronger voice and influence in urban planning decisions, with a presumption of proper investment, our communities will stand a better chance of becoming truly sustainable.
Nick Reeves, Executive Director of CIWEM, said
“Let us allow the Environment Agency to have a much stronger voice on all proposals on urban development and housing, including building on land at risk of flooding and on the planning and management of the urban drainage infrastructure. Had the Environment Agency had this oversight function from the start, it is possible that the very worst of the floods could have been prevented.”

Recently a CIWEM Accreditation Panel visited Sheffield Hallam University to re-accredit the BSc (Hons) undergraduate taught programme in Environmental Management. The visiting Panel were Prof John Douglas of South Bank University, Prof Ken Iwugo of Bristol University and Mr Colin Clark an environmental practitioner.
The course had previously been part of the civil engineering department of the university but has now been brought together with a suite of other environmentally related courses in the Faculty of Development and Society. The BSc course can be followed as a three year, or four year sandwich programme. Students have the opportunity to undertake a year long work placement on the four year sandwich course and an elective module of work based learning which is a 7 week work placement for those on the three year course.
The Panel were taken to see the wide range of facilities and information available to the students both on the campus and by remote access. The University Resource Centre (Adsetts Centre) has both electronic and paper key texts and journals, as well as on-line data-bases. The laboratories were visited and the Panel were shown how they are used by the students both for their practical work and the equipment for field tests and site visits. There is also a very comprehensive map room which gives the students’ access to Ordinance Survey Maps, and additionally access to the web based Digimap. The recommendation of the visiting Panel was to re-accredit for a further five year period.

17. Rock-solid coastal defence ‘bible’ out now
Rock is one of the main materials employed in marine and fluvial construction works to prevent scour and erosion, and to limit wave overtopping and flooding. It is estimated that at least 10 million tonnes of armourstone per year are used in construction across Europe (approximately 1 million tonnes in the UK), with an estimated value of £500m. Yet today many engineers still adopt traditional techniques in the use of rock and fail to gain the benefits of industry experience or new research.
Published by CIRIA in 1991, the first edition of the Rock Manual is considered by many industry professionals as 'the bible' for the use of rock in coastal and shoreline engineering. More than 15 years later, a comprehensive second edition has been prepared with the help of a world-wide project team of experts including over 100 specialists.
The Rock Manual – the use of rock in hydraulic engineering (C683) incorporates the significant advances in knowledge and technology that have occurred over the past 15 years and the scope of the manual has been widened to include all aspects of the use of rock in hydraulic engineering, as well as an increasing the focus on environmental and sustainability concerns.

THE WORLD'S FIRST EVER SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLES CAMPAIGN FOR LAZY PEOPLE Feel guilty every time you read a feature about climate change? Feel like you're under constant pressure to be whiter than white in all things green? The recycling, the Fairtrade, the airmiles, the foodmiles... No more!
8.6 million people in the UK want to live a greener lifestyle but rarely get around to doing anything about it. For anyone and everyone like this, we have created The Nag - www.thenag.net - a website that makes it extremely easy to do just one thing a month to make your lifestyle more sustainable.
How It Works:
- Sign Up and, while you’re at it, do The First Nag: Switch to Green Energy. It takes about ten minutes, costs about the same and reduces your home’s CO2 emissions by about 2 tonnes a year. The Energy Nag gives you all the help you need.
- Get one email a month ‘nagging’ you to visit the site.
- Once you’re there, get taken step-by-step through one low-effort, high-impact action around a lifestyle theme such as energy, food or fashion.
- The Nag’s special software tracks individual ‘nag activity,’ measures its collective impact and visualises it on an interactive map of the UK.
