9. Independent Assessors For Practical Environmental Management Wanted!
CIWEM is seeking volunteers to act as Independent Assessors for the Practical Environmental Management (PEM) programme run by the Institution in partnership with Groundwork (a well-respected environmental training and consultancy organisation).
The aim of the programme is to provide delegates with practical training. The programme consists of six contact training sessions, one of which will involve a site visit to the delegates' premises. This visit pinpoints the cost saving opportunities and possible areas of concern for the regulator, which might lead to prosecution if not resolved satisfactorily. These sessions, as far as is possible, are arranged conveniently for the organisation, i.e. either on their premises or in the evening, to avoid extra work pressures building up.
The key structure is based on a nationally recognised and accredited certification scheme that emphasises the cycle of Policy, Plan, Implement, Check, Review and Improve. This is particularly helpful in enabling delegates to implement an Environmental Management System within their own organisation. The programme methodology emphatically links training to workplace activity, to be able to relate global warming to waste collection, or carbon emissions to electricity bills.
Participation in the programme has given participants a greater understanding of environmental issues, and an action plan to minimise their company's impacts on the environment. Course delegates may have inherited environmental responsibility due to either seniority or systems responsibility. Establishing them as 'Environmental Champion' within their business is a key objective, as they will need to take on the role of co-ordination and liaison with all of their colleagues to achieve optimal results.
One of the major strengths of the course, highlighted by previous delegates, is the dialogue with specialist speakers with 'sharp end' experience, especially 'the regulators'. Discussing key themes and issues with them, in a non-confrontational setting, helps to ensure compliance with current legislation and good environmental practice within participating organisations.
Assessors for this programme are required to provide a five-minute CIWEM introduction at the start of the course and externally verify the assessment process at the end of the course. For the first engagement as acting assessor it is advisable to attend the whole session, which could last either a half or all day. Thereafter it would only be necessary to attend for such time as the assessor is comfortable that the assessment was being conducted in accordance with required levels of practice. At present the likely call on volunteers' time would be once a quarter at the absolute maximum. The timings can be arranged to suite work requirements as far as is possible. For more information on what is required please email profdev@ciwem.org.uk
