1. RSPB/CIWEM Living Wetlands Award 2004 submissions due this month!
RSPB and CIWEM are inviting entries for the prestigious RSPB/CIWEM Living Wetlands Award, which will be presented at the CIWEM Annual Dinner in London in April 2004. The winner will be announced at the CIWEM World Wetlands Day Conference in February 2004.
The annual RSPB/CIWEM Living Wetlands Award was established in 2003 as a means of recognising and rewarding projects which demonstrate the multiple functions and sustainable use of wetland habitats. Funds for the Award are provided by CIWEM and the RSPB.
The Award consists of the Mance Memorial Trophy (a bronze snipe), a framed certificate and a cheque for £1,500, to be used to fund the delivery of further UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) targets, publicity of the project and/or related education.
The 2003 Award was won by the Swale and Ure Washlands Project, which has linked industry, community and conservation groups to create a chain of nature reserves on former mineral workings in the Swale and Ure valleys of North Yorkshire.
Entries may relate to UK projects at the planning, design, in-work or completed stages, however special attention will be paid to projects that can demonstrate appreciable delivery of the priorities listed below.
To be eligible for the Award, projects must contribute to the delivery of priority UK Biodiversity Action Plan species and habitat targets for freshwater wetlands; deliver multiple benefits and ensure no priority BAP species or habitats are harmed by the project.
The closing date for entries is 31st December 2003.

2. CIWEM International Directory 2004
The third issue of the CIWEM International Directory will be circulated shortly to all members in the UK free of charge (there is a small charge for postage, packing and administration for overseas members).
The Directory has this year been produced in partnership with McMillen – Scott PLC. As in 2003 it contains interesting articles by environmental specialists, a full event listing both nationally and locally plus a great deal of other useful reference material.
If you are overseas and would like to receive a copy please forward your request together with your payment of £5 to the Membership Department at John St.

3. CIWEM Annual Dinner 2004
With so many people in a party mood at this time of year, it is perhaps fitting to cast our eyes ahead to the rapidly approaching CIWEM Annual Dinner 2004.
Held at Drapers Hall, London on 22nd April 2004, the CIWEM social event of the year is hugely popular and books up fast, so if you are thinking of attending it's worth reserving your place quickly.

4. CIWEM Technical Panels update
Amenity, Recreation and Conservation (ARC) Panel
The ARC Panel welcomed a new member, Bruce Keith of English Nature, to its recent meeting in November. Panel members discussed their representation on other panels and groups. They talked about their forthcoming event on ‘Soil Strategies: Uniting Science, Policy and Practice’, which Lord Whitty will attend, and CIWEM’s series of events on the Water Framework Directive. Possible future events discussed included Health and the Environment, Public Participation, Non-Native Species, Heritage Lakes and Sustainable Tourism.
Two Panel members of the Panel have written chapters for CIWEM’s ‘Habitats Guide – Volume 1’, which is being published later this month. Panel members are also working on Policy Position Statements on ‘Biodiversity’, ‘Soils’ and ‘Recreational Use of Inland Waters’.

World Wetlands Day Conference 2004
Wetlands: Policy into Action

The aim of this conference is to bring together all the key organisations in the UK involved in wetlands issues to share knowledge, discuss innovative techniques, network, consider good practice case studies and promote business and wetland biodiversity. CIWEM’S WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE CONFERENCE SERIES
Water Framework Directive - Diffuse Pollution
5th May 2004, London
This timely meeting will look at solutions to the diffuse pollution problem in the context of the Water Framework Directive, looking at the use of education and economic instruments, as well as regulation, and considering examples from a variety of sectors on an international scale. It will bring together researchers, policy-makers, practitioners and regulators to share experience, as well as providing a valuable learning opportunity for those not directly engaged in the issue. It will end in an open debate about the ways forward, identifying research and technical guidance needs and addressing education and awareness issues.

6. MAIN Event
MAIN 2004
The Membrane Academia Industry Network Conference, May 19 -20 2004, Cranfield University
MAIN 2004 represents the final event of the Membrane Academia Industry Network. MAIN was initiated in January 2000, with its principal aim of disseminating information between the industrial and academic membrane communities within the UK. Since then there have been three workshops and the development of a database of UK membrane plant and academic study (www.cranfield.ac.uk/sims/water/mem-net/)
The meeting presents the opportunity to exchange ideas and keep abreast of current trends in R&D, plant operation and performance, and governing regulatory and legislative issues. It comprises a 2-day meeting, culminating in an open discussion on the future of membrane technology in the municipal sector and the associated challenges to be met by the research institutions. Presentations will include keynote papers on membrane fouling characterisation by leading international researchers, along with papers in the general area of membrane science and technology as selected by the Scientific Committee from submitted papers. As well as publication of all presentations in the conference proceedings, papers will appear in a special edition of the CIWEM Journal, subject to the usual Journal peer review process.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Extended abstracts (1000 word equivalents) are invited in all areas pertaining to the application of membrane processes to water and wastewater purification. The deadline for submission of extended abstracts is 31/12/2003. Authors will be notified of acceptance of papers for oral or poster presentation by 28/2/2004. Abstracts should be no more than 1000 word equivalents (~4 pages of double-spaced text), the format for which is available on the above web link along with conference fees and registration details. Submissions are encouraged from both the academic and industrial communities.

Ken Roberts Award
A quick reminder that the deadline for entries for CIWEM’s Ken Roberts Award is 28th February 2004. Entries may relate to projects, research or other relevant work and will be judged on the following criteria: relevance to the water industry, technical and environmental excellence, innovation, practical value and presentation. Entries should be in the form of a summary report up to ten A4 pages in length, including figures, tables and photographs. A named CIWEM member must have played a leading part in the entry submitted. In this varied role, you will provide expert support to all business units on water management, manage the water information team, produce water information reports for all business units, and monitor and ensure compliance with abstraction licences. You will also have responsibility for the hydrometric network and the team’s research and development programme. To succeed, you’ll need to be a graduate with four years’ relevant experience in the water industry - an MSc in hydrology or water resources would also be desirable.

Hydrological modelling is essential to all our water resources planning and we have developed the first water resources optimisation model of the canal system. Your role will be to maintain, develop and run these hydrological models and to provide guidance for all water management strategies.
