3. CIWEM Common Interest Networks and Technical Panels
Many members of CIWEM want to have the means to discuss issues of common interest with other like-minded professionals – share experience, debate issues, seek advice or find out about events and other activities relevant to their areas of expertise. The Institution is keen to facilitate this, and will be establishing a number of remote networks via which members may liaise. These ‘Common Interest Networks’ (CINs) will initially run via e-mail and will be established in the subject areas in which there already exist technical panels. This will allow members of the networks to establish contact with Panels from time to time, and for Panels to use relevant networks as information resources or share information in other ways as appropriate.
CINs will suit those members who wish to engage more actively with others within the Institution, but who for whatever reason cannot or do not wish to do so on a more formal level via a Panel. They will be ideal vehicles for our overseas members to engage more fully in the activities of CIWEM. More information on CINs will be made available soon on the CIWEM website and via E-News and WEM, but in the meantime if you would be interested in getting involved, please e-mail your expressions of interest to Justin Taberham, e-mail: Justin@ciwem.org
The new CINs will run alongside the following existing Technical Panels:
- Air
- Conservation and Recreation
- Waste Management
- Wastewater Management
- Water Resources
- Water Supply and Quality
For more information about our existing panels, their roles and remits and the expectations of panel members, please go to www.ciwem.org/policy/panels

CIWEM West Midlands Branch: Seminar on the WFD and New Groundwater Directive Provisionally booked for 17th April 2007, 10.30 – 16.00 Austin Court Birmingham
Groundwater is a fundamental component of the land and water cycle but this is not reflected in the importance attached to its long term management by policy makers and water managers. This has been demonstrated by a recent report from the Environment Agency which highlights the significant and ongoing degradation of groundwater quality in the UK and the threats to its future sustainability.
A new EU directive on protection of groundwater has recently been adopted by the EU. It is a key daughter directive of the Water Framework Directive which expands and amplifies specific requirements relating to groundwater as well as replacing the former groundwater directive which will be repealed. Implementation of this new directive as part of the WFD thus provides a vital regulatory framework within which we can begin to address the long neglected pressures on groundwater.
This CIWEM seminar is aimed not just at groundwater specialists but at all those with a role in sustainable management of water. The programme provides an important opportunity to hear from key experts about how proper implementation of the groundwater aspects of the WFD could make a real difference to the future of this vital resource.
