2. Makeover for 'Water and Environment Manager'
The New Year marks a new stage in the evolution of CIWEM's magazine for members 'Water and Environment Manager', and 'CIWEM News'. Not only has the magazine received a makeover in the form of a modern, contemporary redesign, but members and subscribers are now getting two for the price of one, as a well-known retailer might put it.
CIWEM News is now being produced as a separate publication to Water and Environment Manager, to the benefit of both publications. Readers will find it easy to refer to all institutional news in CIWEM News, and Water and Environment Manager will concentrate on the broader environmental debate, features and news.
As always the production team will look forward to hearing your comments. All views are welcomed at comments@leadmedia.co.uk

4. 'Environmental Careers - The Inside guide' Off the press, in the press and on sale now!
CIWEM's new publication on environmental careers is now on sale. 'Environmental Careers - The Inside Guide' gets to the heart of what young people want to know when seeking a career in the environmental sector. It is written in a non-technical style and contains unique information imparted by people working in the sector. It lays out the many different options available to them, giving a comprehensive analysis of 25 specialist areas, with personal profiles and valuable insights from the people that know the sector - the professionals working within it. Each chapter lists the main employers, salaries and career opportunities and gives guidance on whom to approach for further information. Among the specialist areas covered are nature conservation, water resources, flood defence, energy, fisheries, forestry, agriculture and soil science, transport, waste management, contaminated land, environmental policy, law and journalism. There is also general information on getting a first job, volunteering and student placements.
The book has already received positive coverage in national papers including The Guardian and The Daily Express and feedback that we have received on the book is very positive.

5. Science Council seeks royal charter
CIWEM is affiliated to the Science Council (SC), an umbrella organisation for professional bodies representing the science community. Since its launch by Science and Innovation Minister, Lord Sainsbury, nearly three years ago the SC has been preparing its Petition to the Privy Council for a Royal Charter. This work is now complete and the Petition was delivered to the Clerk to the Privy Council just before Christmas. It is hoped that the Science Council will be awarded its Charter later this year when Institutions affiliated to the SC will be able to award the new designation of Chartered Scientist (CSci) to suitably qualified members of those Institutions. Further information about this and the work of the Science Council is available on the SC's website, www.sciencecouncil.org.
Sir Gareth Roberts FRS is the President of the Science Council and it was Sir Gareth who led the recent Treasury Review into the Supply of Scientists and Engineers which resulted in the Report called 'SET for Success' and the Government's Strategy for Science, Engineering and Technology - 'Investing in Innovation'. Both publications are available on the Treasury website, www.hm-treasury.gov.uk.

6. Who's who at CIWEM head office
Some bright spark at CIWEM's Head Office recently had the cruel idea of putting photographs of all staff members on the CIWEM website. Last Friday John Street echoed to the shrieks of horror as the rogue's gallery went live and staff began to come to terms with their newly found fame. Unfortunately it seems there was insufficient use of an airbrush on the pictures for some staff members' liking. "It looks like we all fell out of the ugly tree!" said one.
Happily, it seems that the initial horror amongst staff members has fostered a new spirit of togetherness as all at the office look to each other for support in dealing with their public humiliation.
Contact details for all CIWEM staff members, together with a summary of their key responsibilities and their beautiful portraits can be found at http://www.ciwem.com/contact/index.asp. It is hoped that this will enable users of the website to target their queries to CIWEM more effectively.

10. CIWEM - Geological society memorandum of understanding
In December 2002 CIWEM held exploratory talks with Ed Nickless, Executive Director of the Geological Society about a Memorandum of Understanding, (MOU), between the two bodies.
A Memorandum of this nature would allow the two bodies to work more closely and share information and future professional development events. In addition it would formalise an already accepted practice where CIWEM allows Chartered Geologists into membership without requiring them to complete an additional Professional Review Interview. This will be a reciprocal arrangement and will be another service for full Members and Fellows of CIWEM.
Rosemary Butler, Director of Membership will be pursuing the arrangements for the MOU with Judi Lakin of the Geological Society over the forthcoming months.

12. Forthcoming guide to sludge use in agriculture
A small team of experts from across Europe has been awarded a contract by the European Commission to write a "Layman's guide to sludge use in agriculture". This plain English guide will cover the origin, production, treatment, characteristics, benefits and hazards of sludges, especially sewage sludge (biosolids) and a short description of the alternatives to their use in agriculture. The authors are very pleased to have been awarded the contract and believe that it can make an important contribution to communicating objective information to society. The Commission's intended readership is farmers, landowners, the food industry, consumer associations and representatives of local authorities responsible for waste management.
It is intended that as far as is possible in the confines of a 30-page (A4) format the guide will be balanced so that it is clear to readers (even sceptics) that all aspects have been dealt with fairly. The Commission proposes to distribute printed copies of guide widely and also to post it on their web site. The Commission would like the authors to collect existing publications of a similar nature in the EU and other industrialised countries. They should also like to include some case studies (preferably with pictures) from the perspective of farmers who have experience of using biosolids in order that the guide partly speaks with their voices as well as being from the perspective of generators, academics and regulators. The Commission also asks that the guide should contain a few addresses of research institutes in each Member State where more information can be found. The team will be very grateful to any that are prepared to supply information; if it is hard copy please send 2 copies if possible. Please send information to Dr Tim Evans, TIM EVANS ENVIRONMENT, Stonecroft, Park Lane, Ashtead, KT21 1EU, England Email: tim@timevansenvironment.com

13. New 'Understanding Wetlands' book
Understanding Wetlands Fen, Bog and Marsh Sylvia Haslam, University of Cambridge, UK
Wetlands are an important, and sadly diminishing, habitat in many parts of the world. They contribute significantly to the planet's biodiversity, housing thousands of species of plants and animals. Increasingly, human management is required to sustain, and even create these fragile ecosystems, and global changes in climate are also taking their toll. Understanding Wetlands explains how wetlands are created naturally and how they sustain themselves. It describes how the flora and fauna of these unique habitats are ideally adapted to their environment, and how the ecosystem copes with pollutants and climatic change. The impact of human activity such as farming, building and recreation is also assessed. The book concludes with a look at the need for conservation and various conservation techniques. This integrated and holistic account of wetlands is a valuable reference for students of ecology, biology and environmental science. Its beautiful illustrations and accessible style also makes it ideal for the general reader with an interest in the natural world.

The 2003 CIWEM Presidential Conference, 'Transport and the Environment - Green to Go' will be held on 26th June at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Birdcage Walk, London.
