1. World Wetlands Day conference 2005: Focus on Delivery – Jan / Feb 2005

Are you interested in the current wetland agenda?

  • Water Framework Directive and the River Basin Management consultation
  • Creating new wetlands and on what scale
  • Water company investment in multi-functional wetlands
  • Why organisations take wetland for granted and what needs to done about it
  • WFD characterisation - reporting the state of wetlands
  • Making the public aware of the importance of water and wetlands
  • Biodiversity and wetlands – future plans
  • Managing water outside wetlands
  • Farming and wetlands – interactions and challenges
  • Wetland archaeology and heritage
  • Rivers restoration – challenges
  • Information systems on the wetland resource

If you’re interested in the wetland agenda and playing an active part in this you should attend the World Wetlands Day conference on 31st January and 1st February 2005.

The World Wetlands Day conferences have become the main conference for the wetland community as a whole to meet and share their views. This year we will reflect the desire to move on and look harder at the outputs of the event in order to, (a) make progress and (b) actively involve both the audience and wider constituency of people in the WWD conference process.

Key to this will be a series of themed workshops which will mean that more people will have a stronger interest in the outcomes of the conference and the delegates can be more heavily involved. The first day of the conference will feature a number of themed walks and discussion groups held at the London Wetlands Centre, followed by an evening wine reception at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, Russell Square, London.

2. World of Difference and Young Members’ Awards – last call for entries!

CIWEM’s World of Difference Award Supported by Black & Veatch and the Institution’s Young Members’ Award supported by Jacobs Babtie are still open for entries, but be quick – the deadline is 30th January 2005 for both!

The World of Difference Award was established in 2004 as a means of rewarding the leading proponents of the practical application of science and engineering for environmental improvement. The Award focuses on innovative design in water and wastewater projects. It is supported by Black & Veatch, a global engineering, construction and consulting company.

The Award is international and open to all, with the exception of Black & Veatch projects. The size of the project is immaterial: small projects that make a big difference are encouraged to apply. Submissions from younger people are also encouraged. The judging panel will consider the originality of the concepts and take into account the age and experience of applicants.

The Award consists of a specially-commissioned trophy, publicity for the winning project, a framed certificate and a cheque for £1000. Winning and Commended projects will be outlined in the CIWEM magazine. The winner will be announced and the Award presented at the CIWEM Annual Dinner in London on 14th April 2005.

Many of CIWEM's Branches and Groups hold Young Authors Competitions. Winners of these competitions are eligible for nomination by the Branch/Group Chairperson for the international CIWEM Young Members' Award. The Award recognizes an outstanding young member of CIWEM and is kindly sponsored by Jacobs Babtie.

Only the winners of Branch and Group Young Authors Competitions are eligible for nomination for the Award. Nominations should be made by the Branch/Group Chairperson.

The Award comprises a trophy (a silver quaich cup), a framed certificate, publication of the winner's paper in the CIWEM Journal and a place on the CIWEM Young Members' Study Tour (or an alternative cash prize of £600). The Award will be presented at the CIWEM Annual Dinner in London on 14th April 2005.

3. Green Flag Awards boost!

Following an independent review of the Green Flag Awards, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) is establishing an Advisory Board to ensure the continued evolution and success of the scheme. CIWEM Executive Director, Nick Reeves, has been invited by ODPM to join the Board. Nick was one of the architects of the awards scheme created to raise the profile of public parks and green space and raise standards.

The role of the Board will be to advise ODPM on the development of the scheme, its future direction and monitor its performance. It will also support ODPM in helping to meet its commitment, as part of its new public service agreement target, to ensure that the number of local authority areas with at least one Green Flag Award standard space increases to 60% by 2008.

4. CIWEM Technical Panels Update

Amenity, Recreation and Conservation (ARC) Panel
CIWEM’s ARC Panel met in early January and welcomed a new member, Professor Jim Harris of Cranfield University, to his first meeting.

The Panel focused on the May 2005 edition of Water and Environment Magazine, for which members of the Panel would be providing a number of articles covering subjects including the wider benefits of National Nature Reserves, Biodiversity, Intertidal Habitats and Soils. The Panel also discussed final changes to their Policy Position Statement on the Recreational Use of Inland Waters, which is due to be published shortly. The forthcoming RSPB/CIWEM Intertidal Habitats Manual and Guide was due to be published by the end of February. Details of where to obtain this guide will appear in future editions of E-News.

Water Supply and Quality Panel
The Water Supply and Quality Panel focused on a range of forthcoming Policy Position Statements which are currently being drafted, including those covering Disinfection, Lead in Drinking Water, and Drinking Water Distribution and Infrastructure Maintenance. The Panel also discussed options for a conference on the Health Impacts of Pools and Spas, which is likely to be held in Autumn 2005. The Panel had recently been involved in the development of a successful conference on Risk Assessment for Drinking Water Supply, which had been held in Edinburgh and was well received by delegates.

Not only is the Professionals Directory clearly signed on CIWEM’s home-page, facilitating direct approaches from potential customers to Directory members, but also any enquiries which come through to the Institution’s office are passed on via e-mail.

If you are a:

  • Consultancy
  • Contractor, or
  • Manufacturer/Supplier

12. Computer Simulation in Water Treatment and Supply

Practical 1-day seminar
There are continuing pressures on drinking water suppliers to identify opportunities for optimisation and cost saving in order to increase efficiencies and earn the maximum from their assets. This often requires pushing plant to the edge of its operational envelope. To do this safely it is necessary to define where the envelope might be and fully understand how these assets will behave under increasingly demanding regimes.

It is also important to understand the detailed performance characteristics of water treatment and supply processes as part of achieving "due diligence" in the context of Water Safety Plans. These were launched as the Bonn Charter by the World Health Organization and are being cited as good practice by the Drinking Water Inspectorate. Companies need to demonstrate that any design or operational weaknesses that may result in failures and thereby risks to the consumer are found and solutions identified.

Computer simulation and analysis offers many ways for gaining this better knowledge, in a fraction of the time and cost of experimentation, and in some cases is the only feasible way of undertaking complex investigations.

The seminar will explore latest initiatives in computer simulation in the water sector, drawing from a broad range of practitioner and research expertise. There will also be demonstrations of the advanced visualisations possible in a Virtual Reality CAVE environment.

Date: Thursday, February 24th 2005
Cost: £150.00 per delegate inclusive of lunch and other refreshments
