7. Journal Changes – Seeking Overseas Reviewers

From January 2006 CIWEM’s Journal – Water and Environment Journal – has been published on behalf of CIWEM by Blackwell Publishing; in line with these changes we are increasing our reviewer database. Reviewers peer-review technical papers to determine their suitability for publication and advise on any amendments or revisions necessary such that papers are credible and accurate; enhance knowledge and understanding of water and environmental issues; promote sustainable development and are a credit to the standing and reputation of CIWEM and the profession.

This is a great opportunity to be involved in the work of the Institution and be the first to read exciting new research. We welcome applications from anyone with suitable expertise in a subject within the scope of water and environmental management, especially from those overseas. 9. CIWEM International News

Chinese Students meet Professional Institutions
South Bank University was the host for a PI-UK China workshop which focused on Chinese Students studying in the UK. The day was a mixture of meeting representatives from half a dozen professional institutions including CIWEM, CIOB, CIBSE and IMechE followed by presentations on the environment sector in China, intelligent eco-friendly buildings, the sustainable Dongtan city project and an overview of the role of professional institutions in supporting development throughout an individual’s life. CIWEM is a member of PI-UK China www.piuk-china.com

EFAEP General Assembly
CIWEM joined the EFAEP general assembly, held in Brussels. The day long event brought together environment professional organisations from several European countries to discuss a number of issues including the development of a Database of Environmental Professionals in Europe. The assembly was addressed by a representative of the IUCN-World Conservation Union, who discussed the programme which aims to stop the decline in biodiversity by 2010.

EFAEP have also updated their Database of Environmental Professionals. This is the EU-wide platform for environmental professionals that will allow individuals to put details of themselves and their experience onto the database. The system will be fully searchable and professionals who register will be able to include their CV, project experience and information on papers they have published. The system will be marketed to EU, EEA, other European bodies, as well as to companies and organisations in each EU member country, so it will be a very valuable tool. Only members of EFAEP institutions can register on the database, which will ensure the quality of the people on the system.

For further information please contact Paul Horton at paul@ciwem.org

Country Groups
CIWEM has begun the process of establishing of Country Groups, initially in the places where there is a strong membership base, for example Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, UAE, USA. The aim will be to identify a country representative who will co-ordinate and facilitate networking among all the locally based members. A web page will be established for each country outlining activities of members and the key environmental challenges in each country. Once the groups are established, they will be supported in establishing links with relevant local professional organisations.

Water Sector Trade Visits
CIWEM Member Jeremy Goad, who is also the UKT&I Water Sector Export Promoter, is leading a water focussed visit to Poland visiting Szczecin and Gdansk, 12-15 February, 2007. Each city is due to issue tenders for water projects in the coming months. Anyone interested in joining the mission should contact both Jeremy Goad, Water Sector Export Promoter at UKT&I at E-mail address: jeremy.goad@gtnet.gov.uk or telephone +44 (0)7770331307, and Ashok Alagh in the UKT&I water team on E-Mail address: ashok.alagh@uktradeinvest.gov.uk or telephone +44 (0)20 7215 4667.

12. Global Leakage Technology Summit 2007

Adopting the most effective strategy for water efficiency and leakage management
25th – 26th January 2007, with a pre-conference workshop on 24th January, at the Hotel Russell, London

Globally, water demand is rising and resources are diminishing. The problem of water loss and leakage is a perennial one, and utility operators need a strategic approach to tackle it. The 2007 summit examines case studies from utility practitioners worldwide - describing their strategies and programmes for leakage management and water efficiency. Together, these programmes form a strategy for restoring a potentially huge lost resource.

The pre-conference workshop, facilitated by Ewan Group, will concentrate on ‘asset management planning and leakage strategy development’, and will be followed by a site visit to view Thames Water’s innovative ‘Smart DMA’ project.

The conference sessions will include an international panel discussion to review the alternative management options being practiced internationally. An industry and regulator panel discussion will discuss the thorny issue of economic leakage models and leakage targets set against a background of social and environmental effects and regional supply/demand issues.

Our regulator panel includes:
- Dr Melinda Acutt – Director of Network Regulation, OFWAT
- Dr David King – Director of Water Management, Environment Agency
- Peter Jiggins - Head of Branch, Drinking Water Quality and Water Conservation, DEFRA

A ‘cutting edge’ technology session will appraise the latest developments for monitoring and detecting leaks, particularly in plastic pipes.
Speakers will include senior practitioners from UK and international utilities – UK utilities represented include: Anglian Water, Bristol Water, Northumbrian Water, Scottish Water, Severn Trent Water, South West Water, Thames Water, United Utilities and Veolia Water.
