2. CIWEM Website Poll – Retrofitting Water Saving Devices
This month we have a new poll question on the front page of the CIWEM website (left-hand side, scroll down a little). With the current concern regarding pressure on water resources in the South-East of England, we would like to know your views on whether the Government should subsidise a scheme to retrofit houses with water saving devices? Have your say at: www.ciwem.org . You can also view the results of recent polls.

3. Information Resources
Are you interested in climate change impacts in the UK or how the Water Framework Directive is being implemented in other European Countries? These are just two of the topics that are addressed in the Information Resources section of the CIWEM website. See www.ciwem.org/resources

4. CIWEM Rivers and Coastal Group
CIWEM has three specialist groups that together encompass all aspects of the Institution. The group relevant to flood and coastal issues is the Rivers and Coastal Group which has over 700 members including people from the Environment Agency, engineering and environmental consultants and contractors. We would like to get more involvement in the group from Local Authorities and other drainage authorities and put on more events of interest to a wider group of people who work with rivers and the coast. For further information about the Group, please visit http://www.ciwem.org/groups/rivers/
Each year the Rivers and Coastal Group organise a number of conferences and technical visits throughout the UK and abroad on river, coastal and drainage themes. We also have an annual Young Members study weekend, which is very popular.
In the last couple of years, conferences have addressed the different viewpoints and developments in feasibility studies, building and maintaining watercourses, soft and hard river and coastal defences, asset management, SUDS, water related environmental issues including the Water Framework Directive, high level and strategic developments including PPS 25 and Making Space for Water.
Technical site visits are also arranged to highlight where lessons can be learned and how particular countries and organisations approach water related problems and solutions. This helps to ensure knowledge transfer and the adoption of best practice. These visits also help us to understand how communities have adapted to risks like that at Boscastle or in Holland.
If you are a member or environmental partner of CIWEM you can belong to the Rivers and Coastal Group for FREE. This includes regular newsletters to keep you up to date with the developments in our industry and the work of the Committee and notification of upcoming events and visits. If you would like to become a member of the Rivers and Coastal Group please contact Sarah Budd at Royal Haskoning on 01733 336538 or e-mail her at s.budd@royalhaskoning.com with your contact details and CIWEM membership number. If you are not yet a member of CIWEM and are interested in joining, Sarah will be able to advise you on how to do this. We look forward to hearing from you.

5. CIWEM International News and Events
CIWEM International Network CIWEM has launched the International Network and in order to keep you thinking about the activities that the institution could undertake, here is a reminder of some of the areas that members of the network will be asked to become involved in:
- Inputting into a CIWEM International Development Plan;
- Helping CIWEM to develop links with global organizations, such as the United Nations, World Health Organisation, International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), etc plus other major institutions such as the World Bank, EBRD the EU etc. and work with the Director of International Development to foster these links;
- Supporting the Institution as it builds links into the EU, principally through the European Water Association (EWA) but increasingly as through the European Federation of Associations of Environmental Professionals - Efeap;
- Working with the Institution to develop an annual International Conference and/or set of conferences delivered in other countries;
- Producing an article for the Water and Environment Magazine (WEM) that reflects the situation in a country outside the UK in which you are working or are based, linked to the upcoming magazine themes, plus support the Institution as it aims to produce a regular international supplement of WEM;
- Becoming a national champion in a country where there are a significant number of CIWEM members but not yet a branch; this would involve acting as a coordinator for all locally based members. The country champions would help develop activities among CIWEM members based in country, act as the main contact point for local members and also act as the country contact for CIWEM;
- The national or country champion would also help CIWEM strengthen existing relationships with local organizations where they exist, these might in the form of MOUs (Memorandums of Understanding), and develop partnerships with new organizations where appropriate;
- Exploring the demand and potential for establishing a CIWEM branch in a country where there are more than 40 members, for example New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia etc;
- Help determine which events (conferences, exhibitions etc.) both national and international, CIWEM should participate in for example Stockholm World Water Week, International Water Association World Congress, and other country specific water & environment shows such as Romanian Water Association national conference or the Okotech Environmental show in Hungary. The aim will be to draw up a list of ‘must attend’ events that take place regularly;
- Endeavouring to raise the profile of the Institution at international events (conferences, seminars) that are attended by network members;
- Supporting the Institution, as appropriate, when it meets with delegations from other countries;
- Being involved in initiatives that CIWEM is a member of such as the UK Government Department Defra Partners for Water & Sanitation (PAWS) and the Partners for Environmental Cooperation in Europe (PECE);
- Helping CIWEM to identify activities that will support the international development of the institution;
- Encourage relevant non-members based overseas, to engage with the institution, for example by registering free to receive CIWEM E-news, or supplying articles for publication in the Water Environment Journal (WEJ);
These points are not exhaustive and they will be refined and developed further in discussion with the members of the network.
The International Network will be formally launched through CIWEM Business Briefing July/August edition. For further information contact Paul Horton paul@ciwem.org

10. Pro Vita Triathlon Team
This year CIWEM has got together a team to take part in the Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon on behalf of WaterAid. This will involve a 1500m swim, 40k cycle and 10k run which will take place on the 5th or 6th August.
The team hopes to raise £1500 for the WaterAid project in Zambia, which is the CIWEM chosen project-link for this year. Zambia is one of the poorest countries in Southern Africa, poverty is increasing and health is deteriorating. WaterAid estimates that only 28 percent of people have access to water and that 24 percent of people have sanitation. These factors have contributed to a dramatically declining life expectancy that now stands at 37 years.
WaterAid has been working in the region for over 10 years and marked a number of achievements. We would like to support their continued good work and raise as much as possible over the coming months towards this worthy cause. Sponsoring the CIWEM team is extremely easy and can be done online at http://www.justgiving.com/teamciwem For any other information please contact Jo Cooper jcooper@ciwem.org Please dig deep and sponsor our team!
