1. Flooding at The Global Environment, Tuesday 9th – Thursday 11th October 2007

Flood risk management is the subject of an all-day session at CIWEM’s annual conference on Thursday 11th October. The recent extreme flooding in parts of the UK has demonstrated the devastating consequences of flooding. In response, the incoming Secretary of State for the Environment has announced an increase in spending on flood risk management, but the challenge of climate-proofing and integrating flood risk management activities and improving our preparedness for and resilience to flood events still looms large.

It is timely therefore that this session looks at a range of key issues for the sector including flood warning, the role of the planning system in managing flood risk and important tools such as flood mapping and modelling. The day ends with a variety of interesting and practical case studies including the Thames Estuary 2100 project.

Speakers include David Rooke MBE (Head of Flood Risk Management, Environment Agency for England and Wales, and CIWEM President Elect) and Peter Bide (Communities and Local Government) as well as a range of speakers from organisations including Atkins, Environment Agency, Halcrow, Jacobs, Royal Haskoning, Mott MacDonald and MWH.

The Global Environment 2007 is CIWEM’s Annual Conference; a three-day, 42-session event at London’s Brit Oval addressing the key strategic issues in water and environmental management. Listening to presentations, debating, networking and taking part in interactive workshops, delegates will learn about the cross-organisational challenges facing the sector and world-class innovative solutions being developed and deployed to meet these challenges.

Other conference sessions at the Global Environment 2007 include:

Integrated Environmental Management, ‘A Sustainable Olympics?’, Implications of Climate Change, Transition to a Low Carbon Economy, Urbanisation and the Environment, Sustainable Waste Management, ‘A Sustainable Water Industry?’ and Faiths, Culture and the Environment.

3. The Global Environment Dinner

Join us for the Global Environment Dinner on Tuesday 9 October 2007.

MV Silver Sturgeon is the 61 metre flagship of the Silver Fleet, ‘the ultimate venue on the River Thames’. Boarding at Millbank Millennium Pier from 6:30 pm, we will enjoy a champagne reception followed by an evening cruise past the iconic sights of London between Westminster and Greenwich.

CIWEM’s Annual Dinner at Drapers' Hall is always a sell-out event, and the Global Environment Dinner promises to be another evening to remember in an equally magical setting. Following the champagne reception we will be seated for a three-course dinner prepared by “rhubarb” on the river and accompanied by fine wines. Both individual tickets (partners and other guests welcome) and corporate tables are available.

On the return journey to Millbank we will put in for an additional stop at Westminster Pier for the convenience of those guests staying at hotels near to Westminster Bridge, or requiring onward travel on London Underground.

For more information on corporate tables of ten, and on opportunities available to support this event with sponsorship, please contact the Secretariat or telephone +44 (0)1359 221004.

4. Making a World of Difference

CIWEM’s coveted 2006 World of Difference Award has been won by Professor Duncan Mara on behalf of the Esholt Research Group at the University of Leeds for their natural wastewater treatment systems. In its fourth year of sponsorship by leading global engineering, consulting and construction company, Black & Veatch, CIWEM’s World of Difference Award focuses on innovative design in water and wastewater projects. It rewards the leading proponents of the practical application of science and engineering for environmental improvement.

The Esholt Research Group identified that the UK water industry is a major consumer of electrical energy, so developed natural wastewater treatment systems that use little or no electrical energy. Their work is now allowing firm recommendations to be made for improved designs suitable to the UK climate and appropriate for small rural communities. The most significant application of their research is the design of the Yorkshire Water’s ecological wastewater treatment plant at Scrayingham, North Yorkshire.

The Award was presented at CIWEM’s prestigious Annual Dinner at Drapers’ Hall in the historic city of London - on behalf of the Institution - by former Environment Secretary, The Rt Hon John Gummer MP, Chair of the Conservative Party’s Quality of Life Policy Group.

18. Rock-solid coastal defence ‘bible’ out now

Rock is one of the main materials employed in marine and fluvial construction works to prevent scour and erosion, and to limit wave overtopping and flooding. It is estimated that at least 10 million tonnes of armourstone per year are used in construction across Europe (approximately 1 million tonnes in the UK), with an estimated value of £500m. Yet today many engineers still adopt traditional techniques in the use of rock and fail to gain the benefits of industry experience or new research.

Published by CIRIA in 1991, the first edition of the Rock Manual is considered by many industry professionals as 'the bible' for the use of rock in coastal and shoreline engineering.
More than 15 years later, a comprehensive second edition has been prepared with the help of a world-wide project team of experts including over 100 specialists.

The Rock Manual – the use of rock in hydraulic engineering (C683) incorporates the significant advances in knowledge and technology that have occurred over the past 15 years and the scope of the manual has been widened to include all aspects of the use of rock in hydraulic engineering, as well as an increasing the focus on environmental and sustainability concerns.

THE WORLD'S FIRST EVER SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLES CAMPAIGN FOR LAZY PEOPLE
Feel guilty every time you read a feature about climate change? Feel like you're under constant pressure to be whiter than white in all things green? The recycling, the Fairtrade, the airmiles, the foodmiles... No more!

8.6 million people in the UK want to live a greener lifestyle but rarely get around to doing anything about it. For anyone and everyone like this, we have created The Nag - www.thenag.net - a website that makes it extremely easy to do just one thing a month to make your lifestyle more sustainable.

How It Works:

  • Sign Up and, while you’re at it, do The First Nag: Switch to Green Energy. It takes about ten minutes, costs about the same and reduces your home’s CO2 emissions by about 2 tonnes a year. The Energy Nag gives you all the help you need.
  • Get one email a month ‘nagging’ you to visit the site.
  • Once you’re there, get taken step-by-step through one low-effort, high-impact action around a lifestyle theme such as energy, food or fashion.
  • The Nag’s special software tracks individual ‘nag activity,’ measures its collective impact and visualises it on an interactive map of the UK.

CIWEM’s free monthly newsletter is distributed to all those interested in CIWEM’s work. The service is administered through www.ciwem.org where you can subscribe and unsubscribe via the side menu button for ‘E-News’.
