3. Celebrating the Present – CIWEM’s Annual Dinner
At CIWEM’s Annual Dinner, Rt. Hon John Gummer, MP, Chair, Conservative Party Quality of Life Policy Group, declared that this was the most exciting time to live since the Renaissance. Whilst his vision of social equity and justice celebrated the future of the environmental sector, he urged his audience of senior professionals and government ministers to address the challenges of climate change now.
Many thanks are due to Grontmij, one of Europe’s top consultancy and engineering firms for sponsoring the After Dinner Bar and Hyder Consulting, a leading environmental, planning, engineering and management consultancy, for sponsoring the flower centrepieces.
The dinner helped raise £2292.14 for Water Aid’s projects in places such as Zambia, so many thanks for all of your generosity.

4. Our Heritage Faces Environmental Threat
CIWEM believes that our heritage is irreplaceable and that we need to be aware of the threats they face, particularly in the context of the water environment and climate change.
In a recent Policy Position Statement, CIWEM found that many heritage sites could be degraded or destroyed through neglect, destruction, inappropriate conversions, over development of their surroundings, pollution damage and extreme weather events.
CIWEM’s findings have been confirmed by Unesco which says climate change, flooding and over development threatens World Heritage Sites such as the Tower of London, Palace of Westminster, and the riverbank buildings of Maritime Greenwich, as well as the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Liverpool's waterfront.
CIWEM believes there should be a greater recognition of the contribution of our historic environment to our cultural identity, tourism and economic regeneration. To protect our heritage, CIWEM calls for skilled conservation through sensitive planning and development, a greater understanding of the impacts climate change may have, sustained and reliable funding, the adoption of English Heritage’s Conservation Principles, and the engagement of the public and local communities.

5. Biodiversity At Risk
With global biodiversity in decline and further threatened by climate change, CIWEM demands that more action be taken to protect and enhance the Earth’s biodiversity.
CIWEM urges policy-makers to recognise that biodiversity underpins our very existence and that action is required to safeguard habitats and species. Although international legislation exists to protect biodiversity, significant losses are still taking place. An estimated 39,200 species face extinction with even a one-degree increase in global temperature threatening others; 45 percent of the world’s original forests have been cleared; ten percent of coral reefs have been destroyed; and there has been a loss of genetic diversity and a reduction in adaptability. In the UK, populations of water vole have declined by over 70 percent and over 90 percent of our once flower-rich meadows have vanished due to agricultural intensification.
Climate change is only likely to increase the pressure on ecosystems as they struggle to adapt quickly enough and within the physical boundaries which human development has set. CIWEM is calling for greater recognition and research into this challenge, with a substantial acceleration in initiatives to improve the knowledge base on the current state of biodiversity resources and how they will fare under a changing climate.

7. All Party Parliamentary Climate Change Group Call For Evidence
2nd Inquiry: Setting greenhouse gas reductions targets: the road from A to B
In proposed UK domestic legislation, at the European Union level and globally we are witnessing the development of policies to tackle climate change which have at their heart a clearly understandable and logical goal – to achieve a safe and sustainable level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Achieving this goal will depend on finding the best timetable, the right apportionment of responsibilities (the correct balance between developed and developing countries), and overcoming supply and demand barriers. Climate change policies based on achieving this goal will also depend on making timely use of the best scientific evidence available.
This APPCCG inquiry seeks evidence from all who have in interest in this issue. It will seek to present a clear and precise pathway for a UK CO2 reduction by 2050. The inquiry seeks evidence on, but not exclusively:
What is the UK’s share of responsibility?
How is that to be calculated?
How does it reflect the latest scientific evidence?
What is the history of the current widely promoted 60% CO2 reduction target?
What allowance (if any) should be made for ‘non-linear’ threats, e.g. sink failures, positive feedbacks?
What allowance (if any) should be made for offsetting UK emissions and how does that affect developing countries’ CO2 targets?
What in any case is the importance of having a long term target?
Other questions will naturally arise. Evidence is not sought on technologies, adaptation measures or financial issues. The question is simply put: what is the right CO2 emissions reduction target for the UK (and elsewhere if that is integral to the evidence).
Submitting evidence: Evidence should be submitted by the 27th July 2007, either in electronic (preferred) or written form. It should be sent to:
Colin Challen MP Chair (APPCCG) House of Commons LONDON SW1A 0AA e-mail: colinchallenmp@parliament.uk (Subject: “2nd APPCCG Inquiry”)

THE WORLD'S FIRST EVER SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLES CAMPAIGN FOR LAZY PEOPLE Feel guilty every time you read a feature about climate change? Feel like you're under constant pressure to be whiter than white in all things green? The recycling, the Fairtrade, the airmiles, the foodmiles... No more!
8.6 million people in the UK want to live a greener lifestyle but rarely get around to doing anything about it. For anyone and everyone like this, we have created The Nag - www.thenag.net - a website that makes it extremely easy to do just one thing a month to make your lifestyle more sustainable.
How It Works:
- Sign Up and, while you’re at it, do The First Nag: Switch to Green Energy. It takes about ten minutes, costs about the same and reduces your home’s CO2 emissions by about 2 tonnes a year. The Energy Nag gives you all the help you need.
- Get one email a month ‘nagging’ you to visit the site.
- Once you’re there, get taken step-by-step through one low-effort, high-impact action around a lifestyle theme such as energy, food or fashion.
- The Nag’s special software tracks individual ‘nag activity,’ measures its collective impact and visualises it on an interactive map of the UK.
