3. CIWEM throws down the gauntlet in the Climate Change debate
Over 40 representatives from CIWEM's various groups, panels, branches and key partnering organisations took part in an interactive workshop focused on how the Institution should continue to respond to Climate Change. Delegates on the day recognised that the breadth of expertise among CIWEM's membership makes it a unique organisation that can contribute to the scientific debate and policy development at the regional, national and international level. It was recognised that CIWEM is a natural leader among professional institutions on Climate Change and that the institution should coordinate activity among all the professional bodies in the engineering, scientific and meteorological sectors; launch a Climate Change Year at the October Annual Conference; engage the public whilst continuing to represent views to Government, the EU and UN; ensure that the journals, magazines and relevant conferences have a climate change focus; encourage members across all disciplines to become involved in the ongoing research and policy work.

4. CIWEM calls for greater recognition of our heritage assets
CIWEM has published its latest Policy Position Statement (PPS), which highlights the importance of the UK’s heritage assets and the historic environment and the threats they face, particularly in the context of the water environment and climate change.
Heritage water assets are diverse. They include man made and naturalised features, with decorative, functional and industrial aspects. Examples include fountains, ornamental ponds, lakes within designed landscapes, canals, dams, drainage and sewer systems, pumping stations, water treatment buildings and watermen’s cottages. Important historic land-uses include water meadows, historic gardens and parklands.
Managing our heritage assets and the historic environment requires high levels of professional expertise and the engagement of the public and local communities.
In the PPS, which was developed by the Institution’s Conservation and Recreation Panel, CIWEM calls for:
- Greater government and public recognition of the contribution of heritage assets and the historic environment to: the identity of individuals, communities, and the nation; the character of regions and places; and tourism and economic regeneration.
- Continued support for initiatives to improve the knowledge base and wider appreciation of heritage resources, especially those related to water resources, water recreation, and wastewater management.
- Greater support for initiatives that seek to understand and conserve our heritage at a landscape scale rather than a site scale; and to understand the links between the built and natural heritage, especially in water management.
- Active protection and conservation of heritage assets and the historic environment through the planning and development control system.
- Better understanding of the impact of climate change on the historic environment and future conservation management needs, and greater recognition of associated wider water and environmental management issues.
- English Heritage’s Conservation Principles to be widely adopted by public and private bodies.
- More resources devoted to ensuring that all communities have a better understanding of heritage and the contribution it can make to the enrichment of people’s lives, locally.

6. Experts come together to stop climate change
Human-induced climate change is the greatest challenge facing mankind. As politicians, scientists, environmentalists and economists grapple with the uncertainties of what the future might bring, it is essential that specialists from across the globe have the opportunity to network, share experiences and discuss findings, innovations and technologies.
The International Conference of Climate Change, co-organised by CIWEM Hong Kong, offers just this kind of opportunity. Leading authorities, scientists, economists, engineers and representatives of the business community and government will be gathering in Hong Kong on 29-31 May to discuss how they might best adapt to a changing climate and mitigate the most alarming of predictions.
For further information of how you can become part of this international event visit www.hkie.org.hk/ICCC2007
