2. Launch Your Environmental Career!

CIWEM’s new website is helping students and graduates gain the knowledge and experience they need for a successful career in the environment. Newly launched www.environmentalcareers.org.uk includes a searchable international jobs-market, an extensive range of sector summaries and job profiles, real life case studies, university information, undergraduate and postgraduate course listings, and links to overseas conservation organisations and potential employers.

CIWEM President David Rooke MBE, Head of Flood Risk Management for England and Wales, Environment Agency, says:

“CIWEM is proud to lead the way in addressing the need to develop the talent of students and graduates in order to protect our environment. We need to change the way we live and our website is key in encouraging the younger generation to take up the challenge of achieving true sustainability.”

3. Look At The Way We Live

This year’s World Habitat Day is designated by the United Nations to reflect on our urban lifestyle. Half of humanity is now living in towns and cities, resulting in over crowding, increased crime rates and rising pollution levels. Residents in poor urban districts and slums are also increasingly vulnerable to disasters wrought by climate change.

CIWEM supports the UN’s encouragement of better planning for crime reduction, security of tenure and climate change mitigation. However, CIWEM also believes that we should examine the way we live, including addressing the growth in our population levels. More people living high-consumption lifestyles means faster climate change and an uncertain future for all.

To find out more, go to www.ciwem.org/press

4. We Have Been Warned

CIWEM is calling for legislation and actions that reconcile the needs of the environment, people and businesses, and that are responsive to changing climatic conditions.

CIWEM believes that these weather patterns are an indicator that climate change must be a major consideration in all future Government policies. It is essential we recognise that current extreme weather patterns may become ‘the norm’ in the future, with more frequent storms, heatwaves and droughts predicted. Scenarios suggest that winter rainfall will increase across the UK, whilst summer rainfall may decrease by up to 50 percent by the 2080s in some parts of the UK.

Furthermore, it must be recognised that even in a small island there can be pronounced differences in weather from one area to the next. The full range of possible future climate scenarios need to be taken into account and it is not acceptable to choose a scenario because it is easier to manage. CIWEM believes that forward thinking, long-term strategies should be adopted to tackle the issues, including adaptation and mitigation.

Stockholm Junior Water Prize - UK Entry for 2008
CIWEM is the lead organization for the UK entry to the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. This competition challenges pre-university pupils between the ages of 16-20 to develop a water related project of local, regional, national or international significance, which has a scientific, social or technological importance.

Students can enter individually or in groups of up to three, and the winning group from the winning school will be supported in visiting Stockholm to take part in the International Prize with all the other national winners, during World Water Week. The national winners will exhibit their projects at the Stockholm Water Symposium, present to the International Nominating Committee, attend the Stockholm Water Prize Ceremony and the Royal Banquet at the Stockholm City Hall.

The international Stockholm Junior Water Prize winner receives a USD 5,000 award and a blue crystal sculpture in the shape of a water droplet. As a result of the competitions, thousands of young people around the world become interested in water. The winners of the 2007 Junior Water Prize were from Mexico and the group looked at the adsorption capacity of eggshells in the clean-up of toxic metals with a focus on lead.

Further details can be found at http://www.siwi.org/ under the Stockholm Junior Water Prize section.

How can CIWEM members help?:

  • If you have good contacts with science teachers in schools/colleges, please encourage them to enter the UK competition;
  • Persuade your company/organisation to become a supporting partner or sponsor of the UK Stockholm Junior Water Prize;
  • You can provide support to the school/college or schools/colleges in your branch area who enter the competition;
