4. Fees and Subscriptions 2005

Your invoice for membership of the Institution will be arriving with you shortly and for your information the fees and subscriptions for 2005 are now available on the membership page of the CIWEM website http://www.ciwem.org/. These fees and subscriptions for the forthcoming year were approved by the CIWEM Annual General Meeting in June 2004.

To make it easier for you to pay, and to give you more choice in the way you pay, you can now do so online via the Institution’s website. It’s quick, easy and secure and full instructions on how to do this will be given on your subscription invoice.

If you would like to take advantage of the discount offered if you pay by Direct Debit then please contact the Institution to request a DD Mandate. Your completed Mandate will need to be returned to us by the 1st November to allow us to make the collection of your subscription on January 1st 2005.

If you have already retired from salaried and fee-earning employment you are eligible to be placed on the retired register of members at a reduced subscription rate. You will still qualify if you undertake some part time work provided your total earned income is no more than £12,000 per annum. If you would like to apply please contact us as soon as possible for a form so that we can adjust you record and subscription accordingly.

If you are an engineer you will see that there has been no increase in the ECUK subscription rate for next year.

For those members who are registered as Chartered Scientists the fee also remains at £15, and for Chartered Environmentalists the full annual fee of £25 will apply.

The regulation management fee will be applied to all those members who are registered with any of the three external bodies. However for those who hold more than one external registration only one fee will be applicable.

Should you need clarification, a Direct Debit Mandate or Retired Register Application Form, please contact the Membership Department – tel: 020 7831 3110 or email: membership@ciwem.org

8. CEO and Staff Sought to Drive Sustainable Engineering

A new Centre for Sustainable Engineering (CSEng) is being established in Peterborough. It will encourage and support the step change in the environmental performance of products and processes which is needed for sustainable development. The Centre is currently recruiting for a CEO, and other positions.

CSEng has been founded by national charity UK CEED in partnership with centres at Cranfield and Newcastle Universities. It is also receiving £500,000 of start-up funding from the East of England Regional Development Agency (EEDA). It will focus on providing key market intelligence and support services to existing and start-up businesses engaged in the development of new, more sustainable technologies and industrial processes. It will also seek to catalyse a more inter-disciplinary approach to sustainable engineering research within universities to match business needs.

The Centre has already won its first major project funding. Bidding with one of its founding partners, the International Ecotechnology Research Centre at Cranfield University, the Centre has secured £200,000 from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) for a project to improve the take-up of sustainable technologies within the East of England.

The concept for the Centre arose from UK CEED’s Encluster initiative – a unique environment sector business support programme covering Greater Peterborough and the East of England. The opportunity has subsequently been tested and confirmed by two detailed feasibility studies funded by EEDA over the last 18 months.

For further information on the Centre see www.cseng.org.uk/ or contact Phil Sheppard or Peter James on 01733 311988.

13. Threats or Opportunities – The Regulatory Challenges Facing the Environmental Solutions Industry

3rd November, 2004
10 St James’s Square
London SW1

The rapid growth of environmental protection policy and legislation across the world has created an enormous global market for environmental solutions, calculated to be over $515 billion per annum (comparable to the pharmaceutical industry) and growing rapidly to $688 billion by 2010.

The Environmental Industries Commission’s National Industry Conference is the key event for UK companies to understand the huge market opportunities being created by UK and EU environmental policy and legislation – and to overcome the barriers to realizing them.

There will be keynote speeches by Rt Hon Margaret Beckett MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, exploring how future high environmental standards will create business opportunities; and from Barbara Young, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, giving early warning of how environmental protection will be achieved in practice.
