3. The Global Environment Dinner
Join us for the Global Environment Dinner on Tuesday 9 October 2007.
MV Silver Sturgeon is the 61 metre flagship of the Silver Fleet, ‘the ultimate venue on the River Thames’. Boarding at Millbank Millennium Pier from 6:30 pm, we will enjoy a champagne reception followed by an evening cruise past the iconic sights of London between Westminster and Greenwich.
CIWEM’s Annual Dinner at Drapers' Hall is always a sell-out event, and the Global Environment Dinner promises to be another evening to remember in an equally magical setting. Following the champagne reception we will be seated for a three-course dinner prepared by “rhubarb” on the river and accompanied by fine wines. Both individual tickets (partners and other guests welcome) and corporate tables are available.
On the return journey to Millbank we will put in for an additional stop at Westminster Pier for the convenience of those guests staying at hotels near to Westminster Bridge, or requiring onward travel on London Underground.
For more information on corporate tables of ten, and on opportunities available to support this event with sponsorship, please contact the Secretariat or telephone +44 (0)1359 221004.

7. Times Report on Waste Management
From the news to the weather it is difficult not to notice how on a daily basis our actions are affecting the environment. Yet only 22.5% of the household waste produced in 2004/5 was recycled in the UK*. This figure is still quite low compared to some of our neighboring EU countries, with some countries recycling over 50% of their waste.
Following on the success of Mediaplanet’s Waste Management series on the 25th September a third edition will be produced in association with CIWEM and distributed with 710,000 copies of the third ‘Waste Management’ report will be distributed within The Times, reaching 1.69 million readers. Members of CIWEM are eligible to a 30% discount on any advertising within the publication; moreover, we are also looking for experts within the Waste Management industry, the report will reach a highly affluent readership and the report aims to analyse the steps that have been taken by the Government, businesses and the public to reduce the negative impact waste has on the environment since the last issue in 2006.

15. European Recognition For Chartered Scientists
The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, (DIUS), formerly the DfES & DTI have agreed that the designation of Chartered Scientist will be included on the list of recognised professions under EU Directive 89/48/EC. This is an important step of recognition for the designation and for the many members of CIWEM who have registered with the Science Council via the Institution. It will grant Chartered Scientists working, or wishing to work in the European Union immediate equality with their continental counterparts.
CIWEM are one of the founder licensed bodies of the Science Council and delighted that this, in addition to its own title of Chartered Water and Environmental Manager, has gained this acknowledgement by the European Union.

16. 2007 RCG Visit to Somerset and Exeter
The 2007 Rivers and Coastal Group technical visit is to Somerset and Exeter. The locations have been chosen to continue the visit carried out last year and to identify the need for more strategic solutions to catchment flooding problems and the need to not stifle development unnecessarily.
An exciting element of the visit will be presentations and a tour of the modern facilities of the Met Office in Exeter that will allow us to identify the ways and means the Met Office use to help us as practioneers manage flood risk with greater clarity and confidence. This will be followed by a short evening seminar from Project Taunton, an award winning approach to delivering high quality, brownfield town-centre regeneration to exemplary standards of design and sustainability.

17. Rivers and Coastal Group Eat Their Way From Prague to Vienna
As part of CIWEM’s European year, the Rivers and Coastal Group visited Prague and Vienna. In Prague presentations topics included flood estimation, the 2002 flood events, flood forecasting and warning as well as the flood protection works of Prague. Site visits includes a tour of some of Prague’s flood defences, Slapy Dam (one of eight dams along the Vltava used for storing floodwaters, generating hydro-power and for recreation), several sites along the River Kamp affected by the 2002 floods and subsequent flood alleviation works implemented and a demonstration of the demountable defences at Krems.
The final day of the trip was based in Vienna where presentations topics included flood protection in Austria and then the incredible 14,000 m3/s Vienna Danube Flood Project. Site visits included large weir structures used to maintain river levels in the Danube for hydro-power generation, the island created between the Danube and New Danube and Vienna’s hydro-power plant at Freunedau. The trip was very enjoyable and some of the things we learnt are already finding applications in our work.

18. The Future Has To Be 'Green' Says Construction
'The Green Perspective' report by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has revealed that over 94% of construction professionals believe that 'green' building is the future for the construction industry.
Michael Brown CIOB deputy chief executive said, "From the survey we can see that there is clear concern about climate change and a desire to enforce sustainable construction but there is a lack of understanding about what is being done and what can be done to tackle these issues. The problem may lay in the fact there is still much debate among experts and political leaders concerning possible solutions and the affect that they will have in reducing climate change. What is certain is that reducing waste and carbon emissions from buildings will not only help the environment but is also profitable to businesses. From these results we can see that there is no debate to be had within the construction industry in regards to the direction that needs to be taken, but reaching these people with everyday solutions and practical changes seems to be where the 'green revolution' is falling short."
Further information is available by contacting Saul Townsend CIOB press and communications manager on 01344 630 766 - stownsend@ciob.org.uk.

23. Rock-solid coastal defence ‘bible’ out now
Rock is one of the main materials employed in marine and fluvial construction works to prevent scour and erosion, and to limit wave overtopping and flooding. It is estimated that at least 10 million tonnes of armourstone per year are used in construction across Europe (approximately 1 million tonnes in the UK), with an estimated value of £500m. Yet today many engineers still adopt traditional techniques in the use of rock and fail to gain the benefits of industry experience or new research.
Published by CIRIA in 1991, the first edition of the Rock Manual is considered by many industry professionals as 'the bible' for the use of rock in coastal and shoreline engineering. More than 15 years later, a comprehensive second edition has been prepared with the help of a world-wide project team of experts including over 100 specialists.
The Rock Manual – the use of rock in hydraulic engineering (C683) incorporates the significant advances in knowledge and technology that have occurred over the past 15 years and the scope of the manual has been widened to include all aspects of the use of rock in hydraulic engineering, as well as an increasing the focus on environmental and sustainability concerns.

THE WORLD'S FIRST EVER SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLES CAMPAIGN FOR LAZY PEOPLE Feel guilty every time you read a feature about climate change? Feel like you're under constant pressure to be whiter than white in all things green? The recycling, the Fairtrade, the airmiles, the foodmiles... No more!
8.6 million people in the UK want to live a greener lifestyle but rarely get around to doing anything about it. For anyone and everyone like this, we have created The Nag - www.thenag.net - a website that makes it extremely easy to do just one thing a month to make your lifestyle more sustainable.
How It Works:
- Sign Up and, while you’re at it, do The First Nag: Switch to Green Energy. It takes about ten minutes, costs about the same and reduces your home’s CO2 emissions by about 2 tonnes a year. The Energy Nag gives you all the help you need.
- Get one email a month ‘nagging’ you to visit the site.
- Once you’re there, get taken step-by-step through one low-effort, high-impact action around a lifestyle theme such as energy, food or fashion.
- The Nag’s special software tracks individual ‘nag activity,’ measures its collective impact and visualises it on an interactive map of the UK.
