Hosted by the CIWEM Northern Ireland branch
Event description
In a new first, a large electricity battery has been deployed at Dunore Point to work alongside the existing solar farm on-site. The battery works at Dunore have been enabled by £7.9 million of investment from Department of Infrastructure (DfI).
This 4.1MW battery can store electricity surplus energy from our 24,000 solar panels and make it available to our adjacent water treatment works at times when the sun is not shining. It also acts like a back-up power supply to provide greater resilient to our works and it gives us flexibility to avoid buying power at high-cost times.
By working with SONI, the electricity system operator, the new battery will power up on demand in short sharp bursts to counterbalance the instability in the national electricity system when renewable generators go on and offline. This helps to support the growth of renewables in NI.
The CIWEM Northern Ireland branch are pleased to have Damien O’Mullan, head of energy at Northern Ireland Water, and Matthew Craig, a civil engineer at Arup, to discuss the implementation of battery energy on the site.
CIWEM members and non-members are all welcome to attend this virtual technical talk.
Part of the CIWEM Climate Emergency Adaption and Resilience series.
