Event description

Learn about the fascinating and complex weir replacement project of the historic 85 year old Godstow Trout Weir, Wolvercote, Oxford.

The project team had to manage environmental, historic, engineering and engagement issues to complete the successful replacement of this iconic and even much loved weir on the River Thames.

The site visit will cover the project roles needed to fulfil this multi-million pound project and the work activities required. Our speakers will discuss the permissions required to achieve getting to site and some of the sustainability issues we faced.

After the event there will be the option of joining us for a drink and networking in the iconic riverside the pub The Trout Inn, which overlooks the weir, famous for featuring in the Inspector Morse TV series.

CIWEM members and non-members are welcome to attend this technical site visit. We will be walking a short distance on uneven ground, so walking boots or shoes will be required. If you do have a high visibility vest, please bring it as we will be walking on the road to access the weir and nunnery site.

If you do have a physical disability, please contact us to see how we can accommodate your visit.

Travelling to the venue

As part of CIWEM’s commitment to tackling the climate and ecological emergency we would encourage delegates to use the most environmentally sustainable means of transport possible.

By Train | Underground | Tram

Oxford railway station is the easiest mainline railway station to Godstow and is located on Botley Road, 15-20 minutes’ walk from the city centre. First Great Western & CrossCountry trains serve Oxford Station, from Southampton to Birmingham New Street. Alternatively, Oxford Parkway railway station is close and is served by Chiltern Trains running from Banbury to London Marylebone. You will then need to get buses to (Lower) Wolvercote.

By Bus | Coach

The no. 6 bus (Oxford Bus Company, JR Hospital/City Centre to Wolvercote) bus runs near Godstow Trout Weir. Please stay on the bus until Lower Wolvercote. Alternatively, the ST2 (OBC, City Centre to Wytham) runs past Godstow Weir but ceases early evening. www.oxfordbus.co.uk

By foot | cycle

The site can be access by cycling on the Thames Path to Wolvercote, from close to Oxford railway station. The site is about 30-40 minutes’ cycle ride.

By car

If you are coming by car, please consider sharing the journey with others to reduce your environmental footprint. Please park at Godstow Road car park (Port Meadow North), OX2 8PU.
