Hosted by the CIWEM Policy and Storm Shepherds UK
Event description
This webinar will launch the research and report produced by CIWEM and Stormwater Shepherds UK, “Highway Runoff and the Water Environment”.
Sampling of highway outfalls conducted by Stormwater Shepherds UK in the North West of England, along with wider sampling and research illustrates that highway runoff is polluting watercourses extensively across the country. Samples are dramatically exceeding Environmental Quality Standards for Priority Hazardous Substances such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons and modelling suggests these are causing ecological harm downstream.
These discharges are not routinely monitored, feature high concentrations of toxic substances even at so-called “low risk” outfalls, and yet are not required to apply for permits by the Environment Agency. The work poses questions around these issues in the context of how highway runoff might be effectively managed, and presents a range of solutions and recommendations.
Part of the CIWEM Environmental Quality and Pollution series.
