South Western Branch: Looking after the land to protect our rivers: Upstream Thinking and Exmoor Mires Restoration

Saturday 20th May 2017 10:30am - 9:00pm

Cost £0.00

Event Description

Upstream Thinking is South West Water’s multi-award-winning catchment management scheme which has been applying natural landscape-scale solutions to water quality issues since 2008. Upstream Thinking is a sustainable approach, working with the expertise of partners, the knowledge of farmers and nature itself to improve raw water quality at source.

The Exmoor Mires Restoration Project aims at blocking drainage ditches using sustainable methods, local materials and local contractors in order to ‘re-wet’ the bog, enabling it to retain water and carbon.

The day will comprise a walk in the moors covering a mires restoration site, a right of way repair site, and a visit to a farm. Morag Angus, the Exmoor Mires Partnership Manager, Bea Davis, the Headwater of the Exe Programme Manager, and Adam Lockyear, Lead Farm Adviser, will guide us through the various sites, illustrating the work done and the environmental benefits provided.

Friends, families and dogs are all welcome, although please ensure that dogs are kept on a leash at all times.

Please bring along suitable walking shoes (or wellies, as you may get wet feet!) drinks and a packed lunch. The walk is fairly exposed so please also remember to bring waterproofs, warm clothes, sun protection etc. to cover all weather possibilities! Please note that you will be responsible for your own, and if applicable your children’s safety, at all times.
