South Western Branch: Wastewater Networks – Challenges And Opportunities
Monday 22nd May 2017 4:00pm - 9:00pm
CIWEM SOUTH WEST BRANCH JOINT EVENT WITH INSTITUTE OF WATER
There are considerable challenges for our wastewater (sewerage) networks going forward. Increasing populations and new development mean more connected properties. Changing weather patterns bringing more intense rainfall meaning existing combined sewers are increasingly at risk of discharging to watercourses or flooding properties. We cannot go on building ourselves out of trouble by up-sizing. The costs and carbon impact would be too great.
However there are other more sustainable ways of increasing the capacity and resilience of our wastewater networks and how we operate and manage them. This joint event with CIWEM will explore some of these latest developments, including:
- Water UK’s 21st Century Drainage Programme, Matt Wheeldon, Wessex Water
- SuDS – the findings from the CIWEM survey, Nick Orman, WRc
- Service Improvement and Transformation in an Operational Environment’, Ciaran Whittall, RSKW
- The ‘Unflushables’ campaign, Matt Wheeldon, Wessex Water
We will finish with a Panel Session to address your questions on these and other challenges facing our wastewater networks and the opportunities that presents.
