Appropriate Application of Stabilisation/Solidification for Treatment of Wastes and Contaminated Land
*FREE Poster Event with Mince Pies*
London

Treatment of hazardous waste prior to disposal is mandatory, and represents an extra cost to some industrial processes, and construction projects. Stabilisation/solidification with cement-based binders (S/S) is an option to treat those wastes that cannot be prevented or reduced.

During the past four-years, the ProCeSS project has aimed to develop process envelopes for S/S of common problematic residual wastes, to increase technology transparency and facilitate an informed choice between treatment options.  The project has demonstrated application of S/S technology to a variety of pollutants, with performance evaluation across a range of physical and leaching tests.  The results from the ProCeSS project will be presented by the 22 academic and industrial collaborators in a poster session, together with other information about the theory and practice of S/S.

To attend the event please contact Julia Stegeman - email j.stegemann@ucl.ac.uk

The Future of Freshwaters (Joint IEEM/FBA Conference)
Warwick University

The need to regulate, manage and understand freshwaters has never been greater. Adding to long-standing pressures, new challenges now arise from the need to adapt to climate change, to maintain critical ecosystem services, and to balance supply, flood-risk management and conservation. Not only must the legislative and policy context for freshwater management evolve, but also skills, practical understanding and capability must be maintained.

In one of the most significant water-related events this decade, the IEEM and FBA are joining forces to promote the fusion of good science with best management practice through this joint conference. Key sessions will examine threats to freshwaters, the evolving policy context and the need to maintain future science capacity.

If you have a responsibility for legal compliance; strategic planning; water resources; water research; environmental monitoring and assessment; aquatic surveys; biological analytical services; regulatory authorities; or conservation and enhancement of the natural environment, then this conference is for you!

Small Scale Green Roof Workshops
Cumbria

The Small Scale Green Roof Workshop:
The course enables participants to learn about green roofs and their benefits and also develop practical skills in the construction of a simple green roof. Each participant will finish the day with a "sample roof" (approx 30cm's square) to take away with them to serve as a physical reminder of how the roof was built. Additionally a CD Rom with practical information will be given to participants at the end of the day.

Background information is provided on green roofs, their history and evolution, and also on the selection and purchase of suitable plants and substrates to be used on a green roof.

* CIWEM members will be able to attend this course at a discounted rate. Quote: CIWEM 1508 to receive your discount.
