Margate Rocks: Festival of Contemporary Visual Art & Ecology

Margate Rocks is back!

The 6th Margate Rocks Festival of Contemporary Visual Art will take place between 2-11 May 2008. Situated in and around the budding seaside town of Margate, this year’s festival explores the relationship between ‘Art & Ecology’.

Participants include Heather & Ivan Morison, Franny Armstrong, Billy Childish, Mark McGowan, Michaela Crimmin and Dr Mark Miodownik. The programme aims to create an interdisciplinary dialogue through a variety of exciting commissions, exhibitions, events, talks, films and workshops.

Highlights include: the Magnificent Revolutionary Cycling Cinema, the UK’s only bicycle-powered cinema run by artists, uniting art, education and sustainability; an installation of an allotment in the middle of urban Margate by artists Sarah Craske and Stacy Keeler; green filmmaking master classes led by acclaimed activist filmmaker, Franny Armstrong; and a rare performance by cult musician, poet and artist Billy Childish.

Two talks on Earthwatch's work with the Nature Conservation Research Centre of Ghana (NCRC) to develop research and conservation projects to the benefit not only of the environment, but also the livelihoods of the local populations through community- based ecotourism.

John Mason, Executive Director of the NCRC, will give an historical overview of this programme, its scope and its achievements, while Prof. Patrick Ofori-Danson, of the University of Ghana, will specifically tell us about his work on the West African manatees still to be found in Ghanaian waters.

Since 6 years, CEREVE organizes within the Water University of Val-de-Marne County, the World Wide Workshop for Young Environmental Scientists (WWW YES). The thematic guideline of the seminar is 'Urban waters', inviting the participants to rethink the need for participative and integrated water management in urban areas and the lessons which can be learned from North and South experiences. The four days of the workshop are dedicated both to the presentation of individual research and the building-up of scientific North – South cooperation projects. Eco Design: Materials for a Sustainable Society will form one of the symposia at Materials Congress, organised by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

The full-day Eco design session will explore eco-innovation, design for sustainability, government policy on sustainability, and industrial ecology.
Specific lectures will consider sustainability issues surrounding packaging, aluminium, and thermodynamics. Speakers from Rolls-Royce plc and the Corus Group will present on REACH and sustainability through the supply chain.

This session is aimed at engineers and managers involved in product design and process development who want to reduce their impact on the environment.
The interactions between sociological and political issues with engineering and materials science will be examined.
