Construction work to begin on new CIWEM Headquarters, members'
and conference facilities
CIWEM has signed a £2.94m contract with construction company 8build for the
development of its new headquarters, members' facilities and
conference rooms at 106-109 Saffron Hill, Clerkenwell, London.
The redevelopment of an existing Victorian building has been
designed to achieve the BREEAM 'Excellent' standard of
environmental performance; and its residential component, which
will part-finance the project, will meet the Code for Sustainable
Homes Level 4. The work will commence in October and is programmed
to be completed for handover on 2nd August 2013.
This exciting green-build project will offer a modern and
comfortable working environment for its staff, a welcoming lounge
and informal meeting area for its members and meeting rooms,
conference and exhibition space to allow the Institution to provide
higher standards of engagement with its stakeholders.
The Institution's Trustees are committed to ensuring that the
new accommodation should:
- Be a welcoming, comfortable space to inspire our members and
guests, and society at large
- Be a facility that will support our members in their work and
- Aspire to be an exemplar of sustainable best practice in
- Be a comfortable and innovative office space for our staff to
enable them to deliver the services for our members and meet the
aspirations of the Institution going forward
- Deliver high quality, sustainable residential accommodation to
maximise the returns needed by the Institution
- Have strong visual impact employing design devices, features
and details that communicates the standing and status of an
independent environmental professional body and charity
The facilities will offer a high standard of accommodation for
those who wish to rent meeting and business space in the desirable
Farringdon area of central London. It will be conveniently located
for underground, mainline and Crossrail once the Farringdon
transport hub is fully developed. The combination of these
features, quality and the ability for the Institution to operate a
diverse portfolio of events in its own facilities will provide a
strong legacy for members present and future as well as a strong
foundation for the growth of CIWEM in future.
The contractor, 8build, was chosen to undertake the work
following an extensive market testing process. 8build have good
experience of green-build projects and demonstrated a strong
commitment to CIWEM's vision for delivering a contemporary,
multi-purpose and eco-efficient building.
Progress updates, including photographic records of the
construction, together with plans and graphics will be regularly
posted on this page (see Page Documents on the right hand side
of the page) and we plan to arrange site visits for those members
who would like to see the project as it takes shape.
