Message from the CIWEM Scottish Branch Chair
Welcome to the CIWEM Scottish Branch site. We are an
active and enthusiastic branch and we believe that we have an
interesting and varied range of events for this season's
programme. Our aim this year is to deliver high quality
events with engaging subjects and speakers, and we will focus on
reaching more people and hope to beat last year's attendee total.
Oh, and please note that for nearly all events there is no charge
to attend. There may be a charge for workshops, but check each
flyer for details.
Starting with the New Members' Multi-Speaker event in October in
Edinburgh through to the Biennial symposium in May, we have many
events on the programme - including the annual debate, which this
time will be on Ecosystem services. With site visits,
workshops and evening talks plus a couple of supporting events we
think that there is something for everyone and we hope to see you
at some of the events through the season.
If you are thinking about becoming a member the New Members'
Group are keen to deliver and will again be running two "Nights for
New Members"; one in Edinburgh and one in Glasgow, so if you are
new to CIWEM or thinking about joining, these events would be a
good introduction to share experiences with others.
Non-members, new members and even thinking-about-coming-a
member(s!) are all welcome to all events - you don't have to be a
member to attend but we would like to think that it is in your
professional interest to join CIWEM.
All members have been sent a programme, which can be downloaded
here and for upcoming events look to the right of this
message. Of particular note;
On 2nd October we have an evening meeting on shale gas
extraction. We tried to have an environmental debate on
fracking last year but were unable to attract speakers. Now
we have three experts from BGS to tell us chapter and verse of this
hot topic and we hope you will come along and tell your
Looking well ahead, please put the 1st May in your diary for our
biennial symposium - on Future Cities - which will be held in
Unfortunately all of the events are in the central belt.
Apologies for this but we just cannot attract an audience for
events further afield. However, one event will be held as an
on-line webinar which you will be able to join in.
Also, we now have a TWITTER account (@CIWEM_Scotland) and we
hope to use this to reach out to our more remote members - and we
want to try to have a live TWITTER feed to at least one further
Finally, I am very pleased to let you know that our programme
this year is sponsored by AECOM; Atkins; CLEAR; MWH; SEPA; Scottish
Water; and WSP. Many thanks to these organisations for your
