Branch Chairs Welcome and Update
Firstly, please may I take this opportunity to introduce myself
as your new Branch Chair and also to thank you for your continuing
involvement and membership of CIWEM.
Well, busy times, and a busy year! 2012 saw major changes in our
profession and the legislative and economic context for our work.
You'll also have gathered from our excellent publications that it
has been a busy time for CIWEM too.
What with more flooding, preparations for PR14, the work of the
city regions, the introduction of new Local Nature Partnerships and
the roll-out of catchment pilots across much of England, we've all
had our work cut out. Your Branch has been very active too in
putting together an exciting programme of informative and
stimulating events, tackling the critical issues, and helping
provide the tools to get the job done.
Of course, all of us are also facing the challenge to deliver
more with less, meeting new duties to cooperate and the need to
work more effectively across the public, private and not-for-profit
sectors. All of which trips off the tongue far too easily, but
represent major changes in the way we do business, prompting the
urgent need for innovative ways of working.
There are great opportunities too for growth - including green
growth - which we can and should act upon now. By making the most
of the UK's track record in this area, we can help push forward the
sustainable development agenda that CIWEM has been so influential
in shaping over the years.
There are also great chances out there for personal development,
despite the tough economic climate. Now is clearly a time to get
'stuck in', but certainly not to get stuck - and CIWEM offers the
constant, invaluable opportunity to reflect on our work and to
learn from each other. Now more than ever we have to make time to
invest in professional development.
To me, simply speaking with members who have a lifetime of
experience in our profession and of working with CPD institutions
like CIWEM represents an excellent privilege and a golden
opportunity. And the great thing is it is open to us all, not just
It is also reassuring to know just how many of you have been
very actively involved and remain committed to our institution, its
aims and its objectives. As part of my new role I have had the
pleasure of witnessing this commitment first-hand, and been
extremely impressed with the results we can achieve together.
I trust you will find our programme of events and talks very
helpful, and look forward to seeing you at a CIWEM T&H Branch
