The rehabilitation of raised dams and applications for Welsh Water, using geomembrane technology

    17:30
    19:00

    Speaker: Jonathan Howard (DCWW)

The lecture will demonstrate the merits of geomembrane lining solutions in the rehabilitation of large raised dams. Particular reference will include a case study of Val de la Mare Dam in Jersey. J Howard was responsible for the design development, project management and the supervision of construction works. The project included extensive temporary works and the installation of 3,200 m2 of a specialist geomembrane.

The technology used was developed by Carpi Tech of Switzerland, who have now installed approximately 120 membrane solutions on dams around the world.

Further projects will be outlined where Dwr Cymru Welsh Water are currently assessing the feasibility of membrane technology on a number of dams varying from mass concrete to masonry construction.

This talk has been jointly organised with Institution of Civil Engineers Wales (ICE) and The British Dam Society

Venue: Faculty Lecture Theatre, Trevithick Building, Cardiff University

    Refreshments at 5.30 in Seminar Rooms 19 & 20
