Calling all students, post-graduate and post-doctoral
researchers from universities across the North of England:
The University Challenge was established in October 2012 to
support and develop university-led projects across the North of
England. We have just launched our new challenge for 2013/14.
This year's university challenge is focused on flash
flooding. Flash flooding is a real threat to people's lives,
and has a devastating impact on businesses, homes and
communities. Across the country around 215 communities
have been identified by the Environment Agency as being
at risk of flash flooding, with 125 in the north of England
Can you come up with an innovative solution to help communities
at risk of flash flooding?
Launched in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Water and
Environmental Management (CIWEM), the Flash Flooding Challenge is a
competition open to students and post-doctoral researchers from
universities across the north. We are seeking to stimulate
and support university-led solutions and ideas that could minimise
the impact of flash flooding.
Finalists will present their ideas to representatives of the
Environment Agency, CIWEM, and other members of the industry.
This will give them an opportunity to attract interest, support and
potentially provide funding for their ideas. Winners
will also receive a financial prize.
The competition is divided into three categories:
- postgraduate and
- post doctoral researchers.
Finalists from each category will be invited to attend a
conference and prize day on 19 March 2014 in Leeds.
