The coveted Jack Lewin Prize (formerly Chairman's price)
presented annually by CIWEM RCG in recognition of outstanding
contribution to our industry. As usual a number of very strong
candidates were nominated. Following a keen contest, the committee
voted to confer the 2011 Jack Lewin Prize to Mr David
Rooke. MBE, FCIWEM, FICE, CEng. For his outstanding
leadership through the major challenges faced by the Flood Risk
management Industry over the past few years in his role as the
Environment Agency's Head of Flood Risk Management and Acting
Director of Flood Risk Management. Despite serving his time well as
a former Chairman of The Rivers and Coastal Group and former
President of CIWEM, David continues to provide immense support and
guidance to the institution, acting as a true ambassador and a role
model for younger members of the institution. Receiving the
award, David responded in his usual modest manner - "My sincere
thanks for awarding me the Chairman's prize for 2011. It was a most
pleasant surprise and I am deeply honoured to have my work
recognised in this way. I have been very fortunate in being
supported by a great team in the acting Director role so I accept
the prize on their behalf".
The two other nominations for this post were Dr Mervyn
Bramley OBE, FCIWEM, FICE, CEng. (winner of the 2004
prize) for his continued great contribution to flood risk science
and Mr David Pettifer FCIWEM, FICE, CEng. who
recently retired from the industry following over 40 years of
exemplary service to the industry and CIWEM RCG.
