SOUTH WEST WATER SCOOPS AWARD FOR UPSTREAM THINKING
South West Water's flagship environmental programme has been
recognised for leading the way in business sustainability.
Upstream Thinking, an innovative project to restore wetlands and
promote environmentally sensitive farming, scooped the large
business award at the Finance for the Future Awards in London.
The award acknowledges the positive environmental impact of
Upstream Thinking and South West Water's reputation as a leader and
innovator in a highly regulated industry.
The awards, founded by Institute of Chartered Accountants in
England and Wales (ICAEW), NatWest and The Prince's Accounting for
Sustainability Project (A4S), are designed to celebrate financial
leadership in business sustainability and reward organisations that
have changed their corporate behaviour to embed business
sustainability.
The judges said: 'The Upstream Thinking project involves working
with nature to improve water quality and meet growing demand rather
than using traditional, intensive water treatment approaches. The
project's success requires collaboration across the business,
including a need for strong leadership from the finance team, to
realise tangible benefits for all stakeholders.'
South West Water's finance and regulatory director, Susan Davy
said: 'It is an honour to be recognised in this way and we are
incredibly proud to be working with our partners to make a
significant impact on the environment.
Leadership from the finance function is vital. We needed to
develop the financial case to ensure approval in the business
planning process. This helped us deliver and implement our
environmental programme within a robust and innovative
framework. Sustainability remains at the heart of our
operations and we are committed to demonstrating the value of
working in this innovative way across the business.'
