CIWEM is an international organisation with a membership base
stretching over more than 90 countries. We input into the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change, support training
initiatives for professionals across the world, develop agreements
with learned societies in other countries and look to further
global environmental knowledge exchange. CIWEM also helps to shapes
European policy by representing the European Water Association on
steering groups under the Water Framework Directive.
The institution's future aims include strengthening the links
between members in each country; further internationalising
existing panels, groups and networks; developing more strategic
partnerships across the world; supporting the growth of
professionals in the sector and campaigning on key global water,
sanitation, climate and environmental issues.
CIWEM's international activities include:
- Connecting members globally via country groups and an email
network of over 15,000 environmental professionals
- Influencing EU legislation on flooding, sludge, climate change,
water scarcity and droughts, through participation in strategic
coordination groups;
- Membership of and active participation in, the European Water
Association (EWA) and the European Federation of Associations of
Environmental Professionals (EFAEP)
- Responding to consultations from international governments,
most notably Hong Kong
- Agreeing Reciprocal Recognition Agreements (RRAs) most recently
with Hong Kong Institution of Engineers
- Developing partnerships with organisations in Australia,
Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, USA, and bodies such as
International Water Association; Shanghai Society for Environmental
Sciences; Water Environment Federation;
- Responding to climate change policy developments via the CIWEM
Climate Change Network and the Water & Climate Coalition, of
which CIWEM is member;
- Participating in international conferences including
World Water Week in Stockholm; IFAT in Germany, Pollutec in
France, WEFTEC in the USA;
- Contributing to international reports on issues such as Global
Water Security;
- Supporting and working with WaterAid, RedR and other
developmental organisations;
- Partnering with other Professional Organisations;
- Working with UK Government Departments, agencies and the
Science & Innovation Network;
- Being the national organiser of Tomorrow's Water: CIWEM's Youth
Water Prize;
