LIVING OUTSIDE OUR LIMITS Human population growth is acknowledged widely as one of the main causes of climate change, with rising consumption levels currently outstripping the biological capacity of the Earth by 25 per cent each year. If all countries achieved UK levels of wealth, the global population would need the natural resources of four or more planets. ONE OF THE GREATEST THREATS TO THE DEVELOPING WORLD Malaria poses one of the greatest threats to life in the developing world, with more than one million malaria deaths worldwide. CIWEM supports the malaria-related Millennium Development Goals working towards a time when malaria is no longer a major cause of mortality and no longer a barrier to social and economic development anywhere in the world. DRINKING WATER QUALITY – LESSONS AND PLANNING FOR INVESTMENT A wide range of issues continue to challenge the way drinking water quality is managed. Key stakeholders will be meeting in London in March to address issues with high media profiles, such as how Cryptosporidium, emerging contaminants, the impact of major incidents such as extreme floods, pipe management and renovation, and catchment management can affect the quality of our drinking water. CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE MUST NOT BE IGNORED The floods of summer 2007 highlighted the potential threat to the UK’s critical infrastructure from extreme weather events, with estimated costs of up to £6 billion. Combined with other flooding events such as storm surges, the threats to our infrastructure cannot be ignored. WISING UP ON WATER CIWEM welcomes Defra’s Water Strategy, Future Water, which was published this week. For many years, CIWEM has been demanding that water be treated not just as an economic good but as a valuable resource with our Value for Water Campaign. GOVERNMENT MUST GETS ITS TEETH INTO THE ISSUES SURROUNDING FLUORIDATION The fluoridation of public water supplies to improve dental health has been practised since the 1960s. However, there are conflicting medical, scientific, environmental and ethical issues surrounding the merits of fluoridation programmes. View Press Release
