Journal Changes

CIWEM's Journal - Water and Environment Journal is now published on behalf of the Institution by Blackwell Publishing. Blackwell Publishing has a worldwide and long-held record in publishing high quality peer-reviewed journals, both their own and those published on behalf of other learned institutions. Professor David Butler, co-Director of the Centre for Water Systems at the University of Exeter, is our new Editor-in-Chief for the Journal. David has been involved with the Institution since 1981, and is a Fellow of CIWEM. He is well-placed to view the Journal from the perspective of the CIWEM membership but he also has a wealth of editorial experience. His highly-held international reputation will also further the standing of Water and Environment Journal.

We are modernising the paper submission, editing, and publication processes so that they are all online.  This will be simpler and swifter and will reduce the time for papers to be taken through the process. Papers should now be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/wej.

Traditionally, prospective journal papers have been peer-reviewed and discussed at the quarterly meeting of CIWEM’s Editorial Panel. Under the new system we are extending the pool of expert reviewers but retaining the expertise of the Editorial Panel members to form an Editorial Board. The Editorial Board will advise and assist the Editor-in-Chief in steering the direction of the Journal in line with the Institution’s objectives, recruiting reviewers and reviewing papers themselves through the online Journal software “Manuscript Central”.

Through the Blackwell Publishing OnlineEarly service, articles that are in final form will be published online in advance of their appearance in a regular print issue. Non-members will receive log-in details to access the journal via the Blackwell Synergy website. CIWEM Members who no longer wish to recieve the hard copy of the Journal should contact Joanna Cooper. Non-members should contact:

SEARCH FOR EXTERNAL REVIEWERS

We are currently in the process of revising our reviewer database. Reviewers have the following roles:

  • Peer-review technical papers to determine their suitability for publication in the Journal
  • Advise on any amendments or revisions necessary such that papers are credible and accurate
  • Enhance knowledge and understanding of water and environmental issues
  • Promote sustainable development and be a credit to the standing and reputation of CIWEM and the profession.

This is a great opportunity to be involved in the work of the Institution and be the first to read exciting new research. We welcome applications from anyone with suitable expertise in a subject within the scope of water and environmental management, especially from those overseas.  For more information or to submit your CV please contact Joanna Cooper at jcooper@ciwem.org.
