EPA Victoria Classification of Recycled Water

Class Water Quality objectives (median unless specified) Uses
A pH 6 - 9
< 10 mg/L BOD
< 5 mg/L SS
< 10 E.Coli / 100mL
Turbidity < 2 NTU *

Urban (non-potable): Including where public access is uncontrolled
Agricultural: Including food crops consumed raw (e.g. celery, carrots)
Industrial: Including open systems with potential exposure to workers

B pH 6 - 9
<20 mg/L BOD
< 30 mg/L SS
< 100 E.Coli / 100mL
Agricultural: Dairy cattle grazing/fodder
Industrial: Wash down water
C pH 6 - 9
<20 mg/L BOD
<30 mg/L SS
< 1000 E.Coli / 100mL
Urban (non-potable): Only with controlled public access
Agricultural: Only human food crops cooked/processed before consumption and grazing/fodder for livestock
Industrial: Only systems with no potential exposure to workers
D

pH 6 - 9
<20 mg/L BOD **
<30 mg/L SS ^
< 10000 E.Coli / 100mL

Agricultural: Only non-food crops e.g. turf and flowers

Based on Tables 1, 2 and 3 of the 'Guidelines for Environmental Management: Use of Reclaimed Water ' published in 2003, EPA Victoria.

* NTU = Nephelometric turbidity units (the maximum possible value is five NTU)
** BOD = Biological Oxygen Demand
^ SS = Suspended Solids
