Meet new Technician member: Johnathan Clark

Congratulations to Crowder Consulting leakage technician Johnathan Clark TechCIWEM, who has just been accepted as a Technician member.

Below we learn more about Clark's career, what CIWEM membership means to them and their advice to anyone applying.

Years of experience

Four years in the clean water sector

What's your day to day job role?

On a day-to-day basis I am responsible for implementing techniques on the clean water network that ultimately help to pinpoint leakage. My tasks vary from advanced work such as step testing to using cutting-edge technology such as correlators to find leaks in the network.

What inspired you towards a career in this sector?

I have always enjoyed the outdoors and had an appreciation for the environment. I knew this job would help me to pursue an enjoyable and rewarding career which relates to my interests.

What is the most exciting part of your career?

There are many things that excite me in my career. The most exciting are:

Exploring new parts of the country. I have been lucky enough to work all over England for different water companies and I have seen many beautiful places.

I’m also very excited by the CPD opportunities in the sector. There are endless ways to progress which give me great opportunities along the way.

However, probably the most exciting part of my career is helping to reduce leakage as I know the result has a significant impact behind the scenes that many people do not see.

What is the greatest challenge the sector is facing?

The greatest challenge the sector is facing is meeting the supply and demand balance. As our population increases and we are affected by climate change, we are struggling to source enough water to keep up with demand without over sourcing, which results in damage to the environment.

This is a very important issue that I feel is not taken seriously enough. I am grateful that I can contribute to improving the challenging supply and demand situation.

Why did you apply to be a Technician and how will it support you in your career?

The company I work for gave me the opportunity to pursue Technician membership with the help of a mentor. After looking into what CIWEM stands for I realised that I stand for the same principles. This will support me in my career as it gives an assurance that I meet the high standards set out by CIWEM to be a member.

I hope it will lead to other opportunities within CIWEM and help me to stand out from the crowd.

What advice would you give to someone considering starting out on the application process for Technician member?

I would advise them that they should not rush the process and allow themselves a good amount of time to complete the work well before the deadlines.

The CIWEM community is very big and there are many people out there who would love to help. It can seem overwhelming at first but it is all worth it in the end.
