Event description

For engineers and other professionals with an interest in understanding current and future flood risk at large scales.

Take part in our free introductory course developed to teach you about the methods, considerations and science behind global-scale flood models. Approximately an hour in length, you will watch three in-depth videos from Fathom’s specialist research and development teams.

Key topics will cover:

  • What is global scale modelling and why is it needed?
  • What are the considerations when building a global flood model and what are the challenges?
  • What is the science behind these models and what can they teach us?
  • How are these models being used in the real world?

At the end of the course, you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire to test your understanding on the subject. Upon successful completion, you will be sent a CPD accredited certificate for personal, academic or professional records.

This certification is part of Fathom’s 3-part accredited CPD series, hosted with CIWEM.

If you have any queries about this event, please contact Holly Taylor at h.taylor@fathom.global.

About the speakers

Ruth Clarke - Business Development Manager - Engineering

Ruth has over 20 years of experience working in software for the water industry. This includes a specific focus working within global technical and sales roles for flood forecasting and flood modelling, as well as platforms that use machine learning to provide operational strategies for asset operation for companies including Xylem Water Solutions Ltd UK, Bentley Systems and Innovyze.

Dr Andrew Smith - Co-founder and Chief Operations Officer

As one of Fathom’s co-founders, Andrew formed the company whilst undertaking his PhD at the University of Bristol. Alongside his role as COO at Fathom, he is also an active research scientist, focussing on the development of computational flood models. Andrew boasts an impressive scholarly portfolio, with a wide range of research examining various aspects of climate change risk modelling and modelling floods over large scales.

Dr Natalie Lord - Senior Climate Change Expert

In her role as Senior Climate Change Expert, Natalie’s key interest is in understanding how future changes in climate, particularly in flood risk, will affect populations around the world. Having held a number of research positions at the University of Bristol, ranging from PhD student to Research Associate, she has spent significant time understanding and developing modelling approaches that allow for the simulation of climate evolution occurring over hundreds of thousands of years, and the potential implications of future long-term changes in climate.
