About the Early Career Poster Presentation Competition | CIWEM Welsh branch and ICE Cymru Award

Each year, the CIWEM Welsh branch and ICE Cymru holds a poster presentation competition for early career professionals who are working towards CIWEM or ICE professional membership.

This year’s competition is kindly being sponsored by Arup and the finals will take place at the Wales National Flood Conference. The subject of the posters may relate to any aspect of flooding or flood risk management, although entrants are encouraged to base their presentations on the theme of the conference.

The theme of the conference for 2025 is “Engineering and Nature; Seeking Balance in Flood Risk Management”.

Whether you’re working on new research or projects on flooding or flood risk management, the CIWEM Welsh branch and ICE Cymru’s Early Careers Poster Presentation Competition is your opportunity to gain valuable experience by publishing and presenting a paper.

CIWEM Welsh branch and ICE Cymru Early Careers Poster Presentation Competition 2025 submission guidelines

Closing date for abstracts: Friday 19 September 2025

The poster subject matter may relate to any aspect of flooding, or flood risk management work. Although, posters relating to this year’s conference theme of ‘Engineering and Nature; Seeking Balance in Flood Risk Management’ are encouraged.

The format for the competition involves creation of a poster plus a less than five-minute presentation of the poster and informal question/answer session with a group of judges. Applicants may enter once only with one poster and the entrant must be available to present at the conference to be eligible. The posters will be judged on technical content and visual presentation.

Entrants should be working towards Professional Membership of CIWEM or ICE and new into their careers in the environmental management or water sector, with ideally no more than five years’ experience in the industry.

Submitting an abstract

If you're interested in taking part in the competition, please read the guidelines and send your abstract, of not more than 100 words, to Kathryn Hooley at kathryn.hooley@arcadis.com. The deadline for submissions is 17:00 BST on Friday 19 September 2025.

Judging and prize-giving

Five competition entrants will be invited to display their posters and present on the day of the conference. The finalists will be selected by a panel of judges, and notified of the results by Wednesday 01 October 2025.

Posters will be required to be available for display at 09:00 on the day of the conference. A schedule will be provided with timings for entrants to present their posters to the judges on the morning of the conference.

A £150 prize will be awarded to the winner plus an engraved trophy commemorating the event. All entrants will also receive free entry to the conference.
