About the Glyn Ellis Prize: Early Professionals Paper Competition

Glyn Ellis was a Fellow of CIWEM, a professional reviewer and Honorary Secretary of the North Western and North Wales branch. He had a passion for helping those at the start of their careers to gain the skills they need to become fully qualified professionals. The Glyn Ellis Prize was created in his memory by his friends and colleagues in the branch.

This competition challenges early career professionals in our region to submit an abstract on a subject related to water or the environment, finalists will present their work to a specially selected group of judges made up of CIWEM members and industry leaders across multiple disciplines. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening to the best entries.

Applications are open for 2025

Whether you’re working on new research or projects, the CIWEM North Western and North Wales branch’s Glyn Ellis competition is your opportunity to gain valuable experience by publishing and presenting a paper.

Glyn Ellis paper competition: Prize: Early Career Paper Competition 2025 submission guidelines

Closing Date for abstracts: Wednesday 27 August 2025

The 2025 competition will take place on Wednesday 10 September 2025.

Applicants should be new into their careers in the environmental or water sector with ideally no more than 5 years’ experience. They do not need to be members of CIWEM.

The abstracts are intended to be a short synopsis on general topics about projects, initiatives and research, which aim to invoke a ‘ripple effect’: projects that involve or inspire local networks, or otherwise resulting from the projects themselves, to take small actions that had or will have the potential to produce much larger benefits at scale.

If you're interested in taking part in the competition, please read the guidelines and send your abstract, of not more than 400 words, to Jack Dudman at jack.dudman@jbaconsulting.com. The deadline for submissions is 17:00 BST on Wednesday 27 August 2025.

Abstracts will be shortlisted by the CIWEM North Western & North Wales branch committee and a short list of candidates will be selected. The successful candidates will be notified by 17:00 BST on Wednesday 29 August and invited to prepare a presentation to deliver at the Early Careers paper competition event.

The presentations and written papers will be judged at a special evening meeting of CIWEM North Western and North Wales branch at the Mott MacDonald Offices in Manchester on Wednesday 10 September 2025.

Each talk will last for 20 minutes followed by a chance for the audience and panellists to ask questions and quiz the candidates on their presentation. PowerPoint will be available if needed. At the end of the evening one of the candidates will be crowned the winner of the Glyn Ellis Prize 2025. They will take home the Glyn Ellis Trophy.

Please note that judging will take account of the content and quality of both the written papers and the presentations and the judges’ decision will be final.
