The talk will cover SSEN Transmission approach to delivering measurable biodiversity gains using the Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) approach. It will highlight why SSEN Transmission believe this is important, where BNG sits within the project development process and the tools used to assess biodiversity and the lessons learned from the last 4 years of implementation.
A number of case studies of both substations and overhead transmission lines will be covered.It will also cover the importance of adequate reporting and monitoring which is required to demonstrate no net loss is being achieved. Next steps required for biodiversity to inform Natural Capital Valuations will be discussed.
The presentation will be given by Dr Francis Williams environmental net gain manager for SSEN Transmission and may be of interest to developers, consultants and those working for regulatory or consenting bodies who wish to learn more about the implementation of a BNG approach in the development process.

Dr Francis Williams
Dr Francis Williams is the environmental net gain manager for SSEN Transmission who operate the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland. Francis has worked for over 17 years in the Highlands mainly in the utility industry in both the development and construction of large and small infrastructure projects.
The current role is focused on developing and delivering on biodiversity no net loss across all consented developments as well as working towards measuring Natural Capital. Developing a strategic approach to woodland compensatory planting to meet both biodiversity and climate change targets is also a key focus.
