25 June 2019
Central Southern Branch invites you to join them for an evening of talks discussing the UK Climate Change Projections 2018 and the impacts of climate change on river flows. The evening is comprised of two complementary talks.
Presentation 1: UKCP18 and the Environment Agency by Dr Matthew Charlton, Environment Agency
The latest climate change projections for the UK (UKCP18) were released in November 2018. The Environment Agency’s role was to lead the user engagement and make sure the projections are useful and useable by others.
In this talk, Matthew will outline the background to the new projections and how they differ from the previous set. He will present the main messages about changes in temperature, precipitation and sea level. He will explore how the Environment Agency uses this information to understand and manage the risks we face from climate change. Matthew will present the research the EA are doing to assess the implications of the new projections on important areas of their work (for example river flows and sea level allowances), inform our own adaptation response and update existing guidance for others on how to take climate change into account in their planning and decision making.
Presentation 2: The impacts of climate change on river flows: a selection of modelling studies by Dr Alison Kay, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology
Climate change impacts on river flows, especially extreme low or high flows, could have important consequences for the environment and society.
Dr Alison Kay will present results from a selection of recent hydrological studies, illustrating a range of approaches to modelling the impacts of climate change on river flows.
