Event Description

The Water Framework Directive is the over-arching environmental legislation that steers protection of the water environment within the UK. It has driven the development of catchment-based management and initiated the standards against which planning applications, environmental permits and long-term management plans are measured.

This talk will discuss the regulatory framework in which the Directive sits and how it interacts with other environmental legislation. From this basis it will then try to examine how the UK’s exit from the European Union may change the level of protection of our water environment or how the focus of that protection may change.

Gaining planning permission for water and wastewater infrastructure can be challenging, especially in environmentally and politically sensitive locations. Adams Hendry has acted as planning consultants on many water resource schemes, including pipelines, reservoirs and treatment infrastructure, as well as WRMPs and Drought Plans. In the wastewater industry they have been instrumental in assisting clients to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of UK and European legislation, securing consents for over £1billion of investment. This talk will use case studies to explain some of the challenging issues that arise through the planning process for water and wastewater schemes.

Hear From:

Wendy Furgusson, Associate, Ramboll and Andy Blaxland, Director, Adams Hendry Consulting Ltd.
