Event description

The Central Southern branch invite you to join them for an evening talk on chalk streams.

Chalk streams are habitats of a significant richness. They support some of the most threatened plants and animals in England.

Chalk streams are fed from groundwater held in the chalk. Since groundwater levels in the chalk depends on rainfall and season, chalk streams are naturally intermittent in their flow. In order to develop the tools to protect them from over abstraction, the identification of ecologically relevant hydrological metrics is important.

The talk will cover chalk streams, focusing on the Chilterns and describing their richness and its threats. It will then discuss the recent developments in the science of hydrological intermittence in the East Chilterns and the developments further afield.

Our speaker for the evening is Catherine Sefton | Water Resources Monitoring Specialist | UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

Doors will open at 5:15pm giving you time to network before the talk starts at 6:00pm.
