Event description

Central Southern branch are pleased to invite you to a multi-institution event on how professional institutions can shape your career. Join us for an evening of networking while hearing from speakers about their experiences of institutions such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), and the Geological Society and how their careers have been impacted.

Speakers include:

Wendy Furgusson | Associate, Environment and Health, Ramboll

Wendy is gradually collecting charterships, currently being a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager with CIWEM as well as Chartered Geologist and Chartered Scientist with the Geological Society. She has worked on projects from the Falklands to Florida and believes that chartership provides focus and learning goals to career development that reap long term benefits. She leads the contaminated land team in Ramboll’s Southampton office and has recently been authoring updates to DMRB drainage standards for Highways England, completing Water Framework Directive Assessments for projects within the UK and Gibraltar, and supporting numerous projects with her specialist water quality knowledge. In her talk she will reveal how both Paul Hillman (Honorary vice President of CIWEM) and geologist Professor Iain Stewart formed pivotal roles in her career.

Rachel Skinner | UK Head of Transport, WSP, Vice President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)

Rachel is UK Head of Transport and an Executive Director of WSP, and a Vice President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), where she leads the Public Voice portfolio. She is a chartered engineer, an ICE Fellow and Trustee. She is also a Patron of Women in Transport, having been one of its founding board members. In 2016, Rachel was named as one of The Telegraph’s inaugural Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering and in 2017 she was named as the Most Distinguished Winner and Best Woman Civil Engineer at the Women in Civil Engineering Awards. She has authored and co-authored various publications on topics including autonomous vehicles and future place-making, and before that about digital technology and its potential for infrastructure, industry innovation and collaboration. She is involved with major projects for clients across the public and private sectors, including leadership of a growing portfolio of future mobility projects in the UK and overseas.

Emma Cross | Water Resources Hydrologist, Environment Agency

Emma has worked as a water resources hydrologist in the Environment Agency approaching 15 years. Emma is a Chartered Member of CIWEM and also a Chartered Scientist and Chartered Environmentalist. Since becoming chartered, Emma has promoted the importance and benefits of professional development within her organisation and mentored others on their chartership journey. Emma will share her experience of how her career has taken shape since becoming chartered.

Rachel Ledger | Associate Director, Water Specialisms, WSP

Rachel is a Chartered Member of CIWEM and also a Chartered Scientist and Chartered Environmentalist. Rachel has been part of the Water Specialisms team at WSP for over 6 years, working on all things flood risk, from early feasibility to construction support. Rachel is passionate about helping to prevent the devastating effects on flooding on communities. She is also a STEM supporter, and is enthusiastic about sharing her story with the younger generations.

Refreshments will be available from 5:30 pm with time to network before the presentations start at 6:00 pm. This event is open to all. If you’re not yet a member of any of these institutions, come along and find out more.
