Event description
The Irish water industry is the largest consumer of electricity in the public sector, accounting for some 21% of the overall use. This electricity, which goes largely into aerating sludge during wastewater treatment and pumping drinking water and wastewater, contributes large volumes of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere every year.
As with the Irish Government, the UK government has set a target of 2050 for net zero emissions. However, the water industry in the UK has pledged to reach this goal by 2030. An estimated 10 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions could be prevented by the water industry reaching net zero two decades ahead of the UK Government’s legally binding 2050 target.
As Ireland implements initiatives for its Climate Action Plan 2019, we take a look at the initiatives of one of our UK counterparts in the water industry. This event will discuss some of the measures that will allow the UK water industry to reach its ambitious target.
